We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mike Moroski a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mike thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I was/am a rebel. Also had/have a chip on my shoulder. As such, I did not “fall in line” with everything I was “supposed” to do or believe. I was raised in a conservative (but not crazy or hateful) home. Also raised Catholic. I am not a very liberal atheist. That is because my parents ALWAYS let me make up my own mind and ALWAYS let me be me. . .as long as I could explain why I believed the things I did. This forced me to learn how to research, how to be smarter than the “opposition,” how to debate, and how to think. I use all of these skills every day in my job(s).
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I hate bullies. As I grew I cam to realize that our various systems in America are essentially systematized bullying. So I fight them. I grew up with enormous privilege being a straight white male in a middle-upper income family. As such, I have elected to use that unfair advantage to try and level things out for others .
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that America was the land of opportunity and that the “American Dream” was real. Growing up a white dude in this country made it easy to believe that shit was real. It is not. That mindset helps me do my work authentically.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My backbone. I don’t back down from a fight or bullies.
