We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mike Bloomfield. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mike below.
Mike, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
One of the biggest trends I’m seeing right now in the IT and cybersecurity world is the rapid integration of AI into both offensive and defensive strategies — and I mean that in every sense. On the one hand, AI has completely transformed how we protect our clients — from intelligent threat detection to automating routine security tasks. On the other hand, cybercriminals are using AI too, and that’s where things are getting scary fast.
A big concern lately has been the rise in Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks. These aren’t your typical spam emails with broken English. These are sophisticated, well-researched scams, often written better than half the emails in your inbox. I’ve seen a case where a prospective client received an email that looked like it came directly from their CEO — full name, perfect signature, even the writing style matched. The attacker used AI tools to mimic the language and tone based on scraped emails or even public LinkedIn posts. That email led to a wire transfer of tens of thousands of dollars before anyone realized what happened. Luckily, we were able to step in after the fact to help with reporting and security hardening, but the damage was already done because they weren’t protected before it happened.
What’s wild is that this stuff used to take real effort — now anyone with a laptop and bad intentions can run circles around a business that isn’t prepared. But here’s the opportunity: businesses are finally waking up to the fact that cybersecurity isn’t just an IT problem — it’s a business risk. That’s opened the door for MSPs like Tekie Geek to become true partners in strategy, not just service providers.
And as for AI — I think it’s a game-changer when used responsibly. We use it internally to monitor systems, improve documentation, and even create training content for clients. But it all comes down to education. If your employees don’t know how to spot these new threats, or your systems aren’t set up to block them, it doesn’t matter how many tools you’ve got. That’s why our mission is not just to fix problems, but to empower businesses to stay one step ahead.

Mike, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
One of my favorite marketing stories — and definitely one of the craziest things we’ve ever done — was our “Couch Potato” campaign. We literally mailed out potatoes. Real potatoes. Not plastic. Not foam. The kind you mash or fry.
Each potato had a handwritten message on it that said, “Be a Couch Potato with Tekie Geek,” and we stuffed it in a FedEx envelope with a 4×6 postcard pointing people to a dedicated landing page. The whole idea was simple: when we handle your IT, you get to relax — like a couch potato. But it was so weird and unexpected that people couldn’t help but talk about it. I mean, who opens a FedEx envelope expecting to find a potato?
Two weeks later, we hit them again with what we called our “Shock and Awe” swag box — full of Tekie Geek goodies, a superhero-themed T-shirt, and a follow-up letter. That two-touch campaign got people talking — not just for days, but for months. Honestly, years later, we still have folks bring it up at networking events like, “Hey, aren’t you the guys that sent me a potato?”
And the best part? We actually landed a client from that campaign — a business that appreciated the creativity and figured if we could think that far outside the box in our marketing, imagine what we could do for their tech strategy.
It was a total gamble. Potatoes aren’t cheap to ship, especially when you send out 100 of them via FedEx. But the buzz we generated — and the new business it led to — made it one of the most fun and effective campaigns we’ve ever run. Sometimes, you just need to embrace the weird to stand out.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think what’s helped build our reputation in the market is consistency — not just in showing up, but in how we show up. We don’t just offer IT services; we position ourselves as the true superheroes of cybersecurity. And we back that up with results, expertise, and a relentless drive to stay ahead of the curve.
Over the years, we’ve been honored with some pretty big recognitions — being named one of the Top 501 MSPs in the world, ranking as high as #60 globally, and even making the list of Top 20 MSPs in the United States. We were also a finalist for Top MSP in the Northeast, which meant a lot considering the competition out here is no joke. But none of that came from just checking boxes — it came from going above and beyond for our clients and being obsessed with doing things the right way.
We’ve also worked hard to build thought leadership. I’m regularly quoted and published in industry outlets, and I speak at events whenever I can because I believe part of being a leader in this space means helping others raise their game too. Whether it’s educating small business owners on cybersecurity risks or helping nonprofits better understand the tech landscape, I want Tekie Geek to be known not just as the team that fixes things — but the team that empowers you to never need those fixes in the first place.
Reputation doesn’t come from a logo or a slogan. It comes from years of doing the hard work, solving problems, and earning trust one client at a time. That’s what we’ve done — and that’s what we’ll keep doing.
