We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Miguel Manrique Chirinos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Miguel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I never decided it specifically. Since I graduated from school, I only knew that I wanted to keep drawing, I didn’t know how back then, so I looked for options that allowed me, somehow, to keep doing it. I think I was just too stubborn to quit drawing, and of course, my family was a big support.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Miguel Manrique-Chirinos, also known as Murino. I’m a multimedia artist originally from Peru, now based in New York City. After high school, I pursued a degree in Advertisement and Multimedia, which led me into a career in Graphic Design. Eventually, I moved to NYC to earn a BFA in Illustration. After a few years working as an Editorial Illustrator, I realized that tattoo artistry resonated more with my creative vision. I sought out an apprenticeship, and eventually became a resident artist at the same studio where I trained.
Tattooing has honed my skills in many ways, from translating a client’s vision into a design to the meticulous execution of that design on skin. Each step demands precision and confidence.
My work embodies the fantasy worlds I imagine, filled with mythological creatures and epic characters—worlds I’d love to see come to life on TV or in comics.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The feeling of seeing my art being recognized, complimented, and appreciated.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Starting from small things like showing support on social media and sharing art does help. Showing up in shows like exhibitions or art fairs, and if possible buying their products. As an artist, sharing knowledge with colleagues makes a difference.
