We recently connected with Michelle Marquez and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
The most important lesson I have learned at my previous jobs and internships is staying authentic to myself no matter what. It is so easy to compare your life to others and feel less than when you look at what they’ve accomplished, but honestly, everyone is on a different timeline.
I’ve learned to slow down and focus on what I truly desire to do. Never settling on your dreams is so important!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am in Social Media Marketing & PR and love every bit of my job! It has taken me a while to finally realize what I wanted to do in my life, career-wise, but I am so grateful to be where I am and love it. My clients come from different backgrounds, which keeps my work interesting. I love social media and seeing my client’s brands stand out!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As a creative, the most rewarding aspect is having the freedom to create. There are no rules when it comes to doing what you love. You can express yourself, use art to speak your truth and find a community that understands you. I keep a pen and notebook on me at all times to jot down ideas/or words that I come across — sometimes the words don’t all correspond to each other, but it’s nice to look back and think about what triggered you to write something down and the emotion behind it. Words are powerful.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Back in my early 20s, I remember feeling so lost. I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a career and in life, and I never thought I could graduate college. I constantly searched for inspiration and myself, often using excuses to make up for lost time. After losing a close family member, I fell into depression. I didn’t have much emotional support and had to find the strength to pull myself together. I lacked self-love, but I knew something was out for me; I just had to discover myself first.
I am lucky to have been able to work alongside strong women who have helped guide me and helped build the confidence I once lacked. It is essential to have people you admire in your circle or some mentor — especially when you feel alone or without a support system.
Fast-forward to now, I graduated college on my own dime while working full-time jobs to help pay for it. A sacrifice that has made all the difference and something no one can take from me! I love the industry I work in and am constantly looking for ways to evolve as a creative/writer. Oh, and I am a mother to two puppies, Osito & Wolfie, and I am honestly content where I am now. I have not reached my full potential, but I am well on my way.
