Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michelle Kershaw. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Michelle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the early days of establishing your own firm. What can you share?
My business began organically. It was the beginning of COVID in March of 2020. Many businesses were trying to figure out what to do with their staff, proper regulations and how to manage a remote workforce. I had several companies reach out to me on LinkedIn to inquire about next steps. It took me about two weeks to realize I was constantly responded to these types of inquiries. It was at that point that I decided to parlay my years of industry experience into my own consulting firm. There were two main challenges, the first how to attract clients and the second was creating a business model that work. I had to apply my knowledge to my business structure. That included understanding what services I would offer, what insurances and legal protections I needed for my business.
With the excitement of a new business idea, it can be tempting to launch without much forward thinking. A lack of planning can mean that your business will run out of cash or isn’t prepared for vital activities such as marketing. Creating a business plan is the first step. I would advise those starting out to understand the market need. Spend time conducting market research. This will reveal your target market size and help you decide if there is enough demand for your business.
As a first-time entrepreneur, it’s unlikely you’ll know everything about running a business. A lack of knowledge can lead to avoidable mistakes that could cost your business money. You’ll also need to overcome enormous demands on your time and energy setting up a business.Absorb as much information you can, particularly about the industry that you’re entering, the customers you’re targeting, and the competitors.
You should also learn about critical areas such as finance , marketing and sales, so read business advice websites, attend events, join business groups and seek mentors. It takes a lot of work to build a business, so you need drive and energy. Being self-confident is a bonus.
Michelle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The youngest of three children, I am native of South Carolina. I am serial entrepreneur, having launched several successful businesses. I am the founder of Au’Deux Beauty, a marine botanical skincare line, in addition to my entrepreneurial efforts, I am a published author. I am the mother of four amazing children. In my free time I love to cook as I was a former caterer, and I enjoy world travel.
My quest for knowledge has led to my many business adventures. I graduated with a Bachelor’s in business from Auburn University, before pursuing a double Masters in Human Resources and finally my Juris Doctor.
I think what sets me apart from others in my field is my adaptability and my strategic planning abilities. As a three time cancer survior, I only operate in a “can do” world. I am able to adapt to various situations and easily relate and empathize with those around me. I am always striving to lean and do more to assist those I that I meet.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I began my professional career in the legal field as a paralegal. I was thrusted into HR as a temporary generalist and quickly realize I enjoyed this field. With my current employer downsizing, I was unsure if I would be able to obtain similar role with another company. I worked on as many projects as I could and enrolled in school to learn as much as I could quickly to remain in my chosen field.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Oddly enough, word of mouth is a very powerful tool. Happy clients bring new prospective clients. I focus of great customer experience.
