We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michael Uzmann. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michael below.
Alright, Michael thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
The original idea for A1 Endocrinology began around November 2024. Although my practice was overflowing and successful under the former employer mounting challenges were difficult to overlook. From reimbursement to hiring decisions outside my control the feeling was always one of being treated as an afterthought. When my girlfriend, Liset, suggested I had the skills to do more a plan was set in motion. Of course “business” isn’t something they teach in Medical School or Residency, so there’s been a lot to learn there. Thankfully I’ve been surrounded by good people like Liset, a local business owner and close friend, my clinic staff and a good billing team. My best advice? Surround yourself with great people.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a native Ohioan my move from Columbus to Las Vegas is probably the biggest story. Following a brief and unpleasant stint in Phoenix a man much older and wiser than I told me over lunch “don’t go somewhere for a job, go somewhere you love and let the job find you.” I always loved Las Vegas and still do, so pairing excellent training from The Ohio State University with a city I love has dovetailed into what we’re doing today at A1 Endocrinology. Honestly, my story is not all that complicated, just a lot of effort and the good fortune to be smart enough to make it work.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absolutely, every single time. Not only have I wanted to be a doctor since I was a child, but the nature of Endocrinology appeals to my sense of order and puzzle solving. Every area of medicine has its good and bad parts, but on the whole hormones are widely misunderstood despite their impact on every other organ system.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
With Las Vegas healthcare consistently underserved despite our growing population the opportunity to “grow” is there for anyone willing to step outside the HMOs. For us at A1 Endocrinology I think providing the most up-to-date, evidence-based care available sets us apart. We’ve gone out of our way to accept a broad range of insurance policies to assure at-risk persons and populations can access care. Our support of the transgender community is also a big source of pride.
