Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael Chiabaudo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Thanks so much for this opportunity. When I started studying photography, I put most of my energy into the technical side- lighting, composition, exposure. I had a big electronics client and created boldly lit images of technical equipment. One assignment was to depict their equipment being used in a children’s hospital, supporting a little girl in what they called a plastic bubble. Spending time with that precious little girl and her mother- the gift of witnessing their love and privilege to share their story altered the trajectory of my career. I couldn’t believe I could have such a profound, emotional experience while working. Ever since, I’ve focused mostly on people, as I get to learn about them and share their stories.

Michael, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a Los Angeles based photographer and digital artist. I first picked up a camera from a yard sale when I was in my early teens, and I was instantly on a path. I’m mostly known for people work, portraits and situational- often in Black & White. Now I’m exploring video work as well. I’ll always shoot stills, but the mix of photos interlaced with moving images creates a distinct form of conveying a narrative and works especially well for social media. I often get pulled into client’s concept and marketing meetings. For me, it’s always a thrill to collaborate on projects and help to brand-build, define what they want to convey and help to articulate visual messaging.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Having a camera and a sense of purpose brings me into situations in which I probably wouldn’t be a part of otherwise. It may be an assignment, or just traveling and wandering through a dusty village. I get to learn so much about people, life and cultures. It’s an ongoing education in humanity and how we all have much more in common than we have differences.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
On a more personal level, the journey is the destination. Each experience is truly unique, but ultimately, I’m interested in storytelling, conveying information in an engaging way with a goal of sparking interest, curiosity and a sense of connection. I often work on photo projects for non-profits which I feel deserve more attention and support. I’m a big proponent of paying back, paying forward and just plain doing some good along the way.
