We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Melvin Henley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Melvin below.
Hi Melvin, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
They say: “Entrepreneurship is like, jumping off a cliff and building a plane on the way down”. I don’t like to think of going down. The risk is risky, but in the words of Jim Rohn: “It’s all risky”. The best bet I ever made, was to bet on myself. People may not see the value in YOU, but it’s job to see the value in yourself. If you work at that, then the world will see your work and believe in your value. It’s literally like a “show and prove”, but only to yourself
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
While my career has been filled with highlights, I am especially gratified by rising through the ranks in the construction industry from journeyman to a union contractor in charge of multi-million dollar projects. Within one year of PAC Leaders becoming a union contractor, the company has sponsored eight individuals who now work as apprentices. I humbly proclaim that the cornerstone of my success has been in being a lifelong learner and passing down my knowledge to others. In the coming years, I intend to become heavily involved in real estate development and envision plans to build schools and homes for the homeless population. Aim to work with the Mayor’s Office in her Tiny Homes Initiative
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
2015: On the decline of a 2nd Marriage, Injured (collecting Disability), feeling lost and betrayed, enduring the murder of a best friend, becoming homeless and feeling defeated, I moved to Hollywood, FL. This complicated decision helped shift a major paradigm in my thinking. It allowed me to see another part of the world, not just through my Chicago Eyes. The change was evident to me, but the confirmation is when I returned a year later and my hustle, intentional business ferocity and mindset, had lifelong acquaintances telling me I came back a different person. Two years after that singular move, PAC Leaders was born.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
My initial investment to start my business, came from my efforts as a Carpenter by Trade. I actually worked on the initial projects tirelessly, uncompensated and with extreme hours. Those funds were invested back into the business. Here we are 5 years later and my CFO/VP of Operations, made me take a salary, this year (2022). For me, the businesses success, is more important than my personal comforts. Besides, ‘ I’ve spent a few years like most people won’t, so I can spend the rest of my life, like most people can’t ‘ . That’s what’s Uber Important to me!
