We recently connected with Melissa Sementilli and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I’ve often heard the saying that true success demands persistence—that relying solely on luck or natural talent can only take you so far. When I first transitioned from the fashion industry to the wedding world, I was brimming with optimism, thinking that my eye for beauty would naturally draw clients in. But stepping into this new industry was humbling; I quickly realized just how many talented creatives were already thriving here, each with their own distinctive voice and established path. It was easy to let doubt creep in, and for a time, I found myself caught in a loop of questioning whether I could truly make a mark.
Over time, however, I came to realize that talent is merely a foundation, perhaps 25% of the ladder to success. The rest is built through an insatiable curiosity—the drive to always be learning, evolving, and embracing change, which I believe makes up another 35%. What I didn’t yet know, I could seek out and master, and with each step, my confidence and skills grew.
But if there’s one quality that has shaped my journey most, it’s tenacity. It’s the determination to keep showing up, to reach out, and to put my work forward, even when doubts linger. To succeed, we must believe in ourselves enough to send that pitch email, to refine our craft, and to trust in our own worth. This unwavering commitment is what transforms our visions into reality, allowing us to create meaningful, lasting work.

Melissa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Having moved to NYC from the Dominican Republic at the age of 13, I found myself inspired by the ever-changing style of the city and people in it. From that time onwards, I incessantly pursued various creative endeavors, which ultimately led me to becoming a visual merchandiser to begin my professional career.
After a few years, however, I found my heart tugging me back to Italy: the birthplace of my maternal grandfather and the country whose beauty was etched into my memory from my first time visiting during my undergraduate studies. The two-year sabbatical started in Rome and then Turin before finally settling in Florence, where I couldn’t help but be in a constant awe of the Renaissance city’s ubiquitous beauty. The graceful and romantic charm of the architecture, streets, history and, especially libraries, gave way to a new idea of how I could use my skills to celebrate some of life’s most special moments: creating customized stationary, using both traditional and modern techniques, for once-in-a-lifetime events. Through my work, I seek to design timeless heirlooms for clients who value elegance, sophistication and quality.
My mission is to ensure that each invitation is a beautiful, tangible mirror of my clients’ story, taste, and love. For this reason, I have a completely hands-on approach throughout the entire design and production process, where I closely collaborate with clients to ensure no detail is left behind and where I am ever present at the studio – digital printing, letter pressing, gold foiling and wax seal stamping to guarantee the utmost level of quality in every invitation.
My openness, love of a good romantic story, and desire to always put my clients first drive me to create experiences that feel personal, meaningful, and filled with genuine connection. I aim to make each moment memorable, weaving my passion for the small details into client happiness in everything I do.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the most pivotal moments in my journey came after years of dedicating myself to visual merchandising in NYC. Growing up in that vibrant city, with its diversity of style and constant reinvention, I learned to appreciate creativity in every form. I had built a foundation in my field, immersing myself in the art of storytelling through visual displays and loving every bit of it. But there was a soft pull towards the allure of a slower, more romantic life. It became clear that I needed to explore something beyond the fast-paced world of New York.
This realization led me to Italy, a place that had held a special charm for me since my first visit years earlier. My grandfather had always shared stories of his homeland, and I remembered feeling captivated by the beauty and artistry that seemed to be woven into the Italian landscape itself. What was meant to be a brief escape became a transformative two-year sabbatical.
Florence showed me a new kind of beauty, one that emphasized timelessness over trends. Walking through its streets, I felt inspired not just to view art but to create it. I realized I could translate this experience into a new venture: creating bespoke stationery that celebrates life’s milestones in a way that’s both elegant and enduring. I wanted to take the romance of Florence—the textures, the details, the attention to craftsmanship—and infuse it into each piece I designed.
This shift was not without its challenges. I had to master new techniques, from traditional letterpress printing to gold foiling, and refine my design skills in ways that were entirely different from merchandising. But each challenge was a reminder of why I had pivoted in the first place: to create something meaningful, something lasting.
Today, I look back on that decision as one of the most important in my life. It was a leap of faith into a world where I could blend my love for beauty with my desire to craft personal, memorable keepsakes. Through this pivot, I’ve been able to create not just stationery, but heirlooms that tell stories of love, tradition, and elegance—pieces that are as timeless as the love that inspired them.

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
Yes, I personally manufacture each piece of stationery, and the journey to doing so has been an adventure in passion, persistence, and craftsmanship. I didn’t have a formal background in graphic design when I began, so I threw myself into learning from scratch. Through Skillshare classes, countless YouTube tutorials, and hours of practice, I taught myself Adobe programs, illustration, calligraphy, and color correction. I wanted to ensure I could handle each element with precision and an eye for detail.
My first step into hands-on production came when I invested in a home digital printer. I loved the control it gave me over each piece, from perfecting the colors to experimenting with different papers. But as my work evolved, I found myself craving the depth and tactile quality that only traditional techniques could offer. That’s when I started searching for studios around New York City where I could study letterpress printing, determined to add a new dimension to my work.
Eventually, I discovered a studio with vintage Vandercook presses, and it felt like a treasure trove of possibility. Learning the art of letterpress was both exhilarating and humbling, but with each session, I became more skilled and more connected to the process. Seeing ink pressed so delicately into the paper felt like adding a heartbeat to my designs. I also took care to source only the finest quality papers, searching the city to find stocks with the perfect weight, texture, and feel—paper that would complement each invitation and elevate it into an heirloom.
Along the way, I’ve learned that manufacturing is about far more than technique; it’s about patience and persistence. Every step, from design to the final press, requires attention and care. Being hands-on at every stage allows me to ensure that each invitation is an authentic reflection of my clients’ stories, capturing their style and sentiment in a piece they can treasure for years to come. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been filled with learning, mentorship, and an ever-growing appreciation for the art and soul of creating something beautiful by hand.
Each invitation I make is a personal labor of love—a testament to my journey, my heritage, and my commitment to craftsmanship. It’s my way of giving clients not just stationery, but a tangible piece of art that reflects their own unique story.
