We recently connected with Melissa Garza and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
One of the biggest challenges to profitability for a solo esthetician is the high cost of overhead expenses. Estheticians often have to bear the burden of renting or leasing a suitable workspace, purchasing equipment and supplies, and investing in quality skincare products. These expenses can eat into their profits significantly.
Additionally, solo estheticians face the difficulty of attracting and retaining a consistent client base. Establishing a loyal clientele takes time and effort. Without a steady stream of clients, it becomes challenging to maintain a sustainable income.
Furthermore, solo estheticians often struggle with the limited capacity to provide services. They have a finite number of hours in a day and can only serve a certain number of clients. This limitation can hinder their ability to generate more revenue and expand their business.
As an esthetician, I have always been fascinated by the transformative power of skincare. Over time, I realized that to truly excel in the competitive esthetics industry, I needed to find my niche—something that would set me apart and boost my profitability.
After careful consideration, I decided to focus on three prevalent concerns that clients often sought help with: anti-aging, hyperpigmentation and acne. These issues were not only widespread but also presented an opportunity for me to become an expert in specialized treatments, allowing me to streamline costs and attract clients seeking targeted solutions.
To embark on this journey, I dedicated countless hours to studying the science behind aging and hyperpigmentation. I attended advanced training courses, obtained certifications in cutting-edge anti-aging techniques, and delved into the research surrounding effective skincare ingredients.
Armed with knowledge and expertise, I transformed my studio into a haven for clients looking to combat signs of aging and achieve a more even complexion. I invested in state-of-the-art equipment specifically designed for anti-aging treatments and hyperpigmentation correction.
To further optimize my profitability, I carefully curated a range of skincare products that were highly effective yet cost-efficient. By establishing partnerships with reputable skincare brands, I negotiated favorable pricing terms, enabling me to pass on the benefits to my clients while maintaining a healthy profit margin.
I developed personalized treatment plans, combining the latest technologies with my expertise in anti-aging, hyperpigmentation and acne treatments. Clients have not only been thrilled with the visible transformations they experience but also appreciate the customized approach I offer. This has led to a loyal customer base that returns for regular treatments and refer their friends and family.
Through my specialization in anti-aging, hyperpigmentation and acne, I not only improved profitability but also found immense fulfillment in helping clients regain their confidence and feel comfortable in their own skin. My decision to focus on this niche has allowed me to optimize costs, provide exceptional results, and carve out a unique space for myself in the esthetics industry.
As I continue my journey as a dedicated esthetician, I am grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact while thriving in a field that I am truly passionate about.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
In the late 90s, while studying in college, my interest in the beauty industry sparked when I started working at a spa in Austin, Texas. It was there that I discovered my true calling as an aesthetician, a profession that combines science with detective work to solve clients’ skincare issues. Since then, I have witnessed the constant evolution and challenges within the aesthetics industry. As both an aesthetician and an entrepreneur, I have embraced the lifelong learning required to stay ahead of trends and provide exceptional service to clients. In 2017, I founded The Skin Retreat, a business that has transformed and grown amidst the backdrop of the pandemic. Along the way, I have also found joy in mentoring and training aspiring aestheticians, sharing my knowledge and experiences.
One of the most exciting aspects of being an aesthetician is staying abreast of the latest developments and trends in the industry. It is a field that demands continuous learning, as each client brings unique challenges and opportunities to learn something new. Understanding a client’s lifestyle and habits is like being a detective, unraveling the root causes of their skincare issues and working together to find effective solutions. The beauty industry constantly introduces new techniques, products, and technologies, requiring aestheticians to invest time in studying and adapting to these changes.
As an aesthetician and business owner, the responsibilities extend beyond providing exceptional skincare services. Managing a solo business entails understanding social media, accounting, marketing, website development, and more. To thrive as an entrepreneur, one must possess a genuine passion for the business side of the industry, alongside the artistry of aesthetics. Over the years, I have honed my skills not only as an aesthetician but also as a business strategist, navigating through the intricacies of running a successful enterprise.
The aesthetics industry offers a wealth of specialization options, catering to diverse client needs and preferences. Aesthetic approaches can range from holistic and relaxing to clinical and results-driven, with even more specific niches within these categories. Personally, I have gravitated towards a no-nonsense, results-driven clinical approach, finding fulfillment in delivering transformative outcomes for clients. This focus has allowed me to establish my identity as an aesthetician and create a niche within the industry.
The journey of developing my business took an unexpected turn with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. The resulting shutdowns and restrictions provided an opportunity for deep self-reflection and learning. Utilizing the downtime effectively, I dedicated myself to extensive study and continuous professional development. This period of growth and adaptation enabled me to refine my skills and knowledge, preparing me for the resurgence of the industry.
Having experienced the challenges and excitement of starting as an aesthetician with limited knowledge, I recognized the importance of mentorship. I have embraced the role of aesthetics trainer and mentor, sharing my insights and expertise with aspiring aestheticians. Guiding and supporting them in their journey allows me to give back to the industry while ensuring that the next generation of aestheticians delivers exceptional service and achieves remarkable results.
The aesthetics industry has blossomed into a booming field, attracting individuals who aspire to work for themselves and make a difference in their clients’ lives. My journey as an aesthetician has been a testament to the power of passion, continuous learning, and entrepreneurship. As the industry evolves, I am committed to staying at the forefront of advancements, delivering exceptional service, and nurturing future aestheticians to reach their full potential. With each client, I am reminded of the profound impact aesthetics can have on one’s self-confidence and well-being, reaffirming my love for this ever-evolving field.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
Over the years, with the ever-changing economic landscape there have been many close calls and financial challenges. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a loyal client base that jumps at the chance to purchase my services when there is a special going on. Entrepreneurship is a journey and can be a struggle at times. You have to learn to pivot and get creative with your menu and marketing during those times.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My goal is to empower every client that walks through my door so they can make an informed decision. I educate them on the causes of their issues, what changes they can make to improve them and how I can help with products and treatments. I explain why I’ve chosen the products and treatments I recommend and offer options to fit their budget and schedule. I believe this is what sets me apart. Not only my years of experience and expertise but the customer service I provide.
