We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mel , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The last few projects I have worked on have been pretty dear to my heart. The last 2 years I’ve been working on healing my soul and I used my photography as an outlet to tell a story. I was telling my story to be exact. There is a series that I did in 2024 that I named “Immersed.” The model, Meg, was a trooper during this shoot. We shot in a water tank and she wore this beautiful flowy dress and just did her thing. The concept was simple and shared my opinion on the 3 stages of love: The At first, the passionate love and of course heartbreak. The first stage was full of pinks and whimsical poses and to create this idea of just floating in the air because at first it feels like you’re daydreaming or you’re on cloud 9. The second stage is the deep passion and when you’re in love so it’s full of deep reds. Last but not least, the last stage which is heartbreak and I went with the blues and lifeless poses because that’s what my heartbreak felt like all those years ago. I went over the concept with Meg and let me tell you she brought my vision to life. The reason why it was so meaningful to me is because I, like many others, was trying to heal my heart and learning to love again. I wanted to share what love looked like to me and I did just that and displayed my work in my home.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a tattooed photographer and I got into this business because I wanted to see more tattooed people in the industry. As the years went on, I wanted to photograph women because I wanted them to feel empowered and beautiful inside and out. I wanted to them to feel like the goddess that they are. As of recent, I moved to telling my story and using my photography as a creative outlet and now… well I’m not sure which direction I want to go in. I love the EDM scene maybe I’ll dabble in that for a bit.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think non-creatives will never understand why we don’t give up our creative side. We could be in such a funk that we don’t create anything for months but we don’t delete our Instagram page or stop writing exerts or ideas. We just keep going, why? Because we love it! It’s OUR creativity that makes us come back again. I’ve been on so many hiatuses these last few years. Then I’m back behind the camera or putting together a mood board and I say to myself “I’m meant to do this.” I think only other creatives will understand this because normal life gets busy and holding down a full time job and creating gets exhausting but we ALWAYS come back to it.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Personally, I have to start with baby steps. I have been on and off with my photography and I haven’t really thought about my new mission or goal. Long term goal, I want this to be full time and be my main source of income but that’s a generic answer. Being put on the spot now, I want to own a photography studio, showcase my work in a gallery and meet other creatives. Who knows, maybe that’s in the near future..
