We were lucky to catch up with Mazhar Kathi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mazhar, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The idea for The Catalyst Business Development Consulting actually grew from a very personal place of observation and empathy during my time as a Business Development Specialist at an upscale Hotel here in Salt Lake City.
In my role, I interacted with an incredibly diverse workforce. I continuously met individuals from various ethnic backgrounds who possessed immense talent, drive, and entrepreneurial potential. Yet, the vast majority of them were working in survival jobs—as janitors, housekeepers, bellboys, dishwashers, and shuttle drivers.
As I got to know them and listened to their stories of struggle and their deep desire to achieve the American Dream, my heart truly broke. I realized there were two primary barriers holding them back from their true potential: first, a language barrier, as many didn’t speak English fluently; and second, a fundamental lack of knowledge on how to navigate the system to start their own ventures.
As a business development professional, I saw a profound disconnect. There was incredible human capital being underutilized simply because they lacked the right guidance and resources. But where there is a gap like that, there is also a tremendous market opportunity. I realized that if I could build a bridge to help them overcome those language and logistical barriers, I could empower them to launch their own successful ventures.
That was the moment I knew I had to act. It’s exactly why I founded The Catalyst Business Development Consulting LLC—to be that bridge, serve an untapped market, and turn their potential into a tangible reality.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Mazhar Aslam Kathi, Founder and Business Development Director at The Catalyst Business Development Consulting LLC. Growing up in a modest family in Ahmedabad, India, I learned the value of hard work and discipline early on. After building an academic foundation in commerce and moving to the United States, I established my career in business development. I founded The Catalyst on a core belief: your starting point doesn’t dictate your success—your drive does. I saw a real need to help aspiring entrepreneurs successfully navigate the critical early stages of building a business.
At The Catalyst, we turn ideas into impactful enterprises for startups and small businesses. We offer comprehensive, tailored consulting services to optimize operations, increase profitability, and scale businesses to the next level. By bridging the gap between innovation and execution, our ultimate goal is to help business owners stop guessing and start growing.
Our differentiator is our highly personalized approach. We don’t rely on cookie-cutter solutions. My team and I dive deep into your business to create customized strategies that align with your specific goals, helping you overcome unique challenges and create local jobs.
Personally, my proudest milestone is my recent appointment to the Business Advisory Board for the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office. Going from the streets of Ahmedabad to shaping economic policy in Salt Lake City is a tremendous honor. In this role, I advocate for small businesses and ensure our local economy continues to thrive.
If there’s one thing I want potential clients to know, it’s that your business has untapped potential, and we are here to ignite it. My mission is to help you turn your entrepreneurial spark into sustainable, tangible success.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
The initial capital for The Catalyst didn’t come from an outside investor or a loan; it came directly from four years of relentless saving and hard work. From 2021 to 2025, I put myself on a very strict financial plan, setting aside a portion of my salary every single month. During my day job, I poured my absolute passion and dedication into my work to ensure I was always a top performer. I regularly took on extra, long shifts specifically to earn performance bonuses from my employers, knowing every extra dollar was going toward my dream. When the time finally came to launch The Catalyst, I did something that requires a lot of faith: I liquidated every penny of my savings and invested it all into the company. I went all-in because I knew exactly what this business could achieve.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Coming from a modest background, I was raised with the idea that my personal grit and individual ‘hustle’ were the only things I could rely on. For a long time, I carried that ‘solo-warrior’ mentality with me. When I first started building my career in the U.S. and eventually launched The Catalyst, I tried to wear every single hat—operations, sales, marketing, and strategy.
I quickly realized that while that intensity got me off the starting line, it was actually a bottleneck for growth. I had to ‘unlearn’ the habit of micromanaging and the fear of delegating. I realized that to build a truly sustainable enterprise, I needed to trust my team’s expertise. Unlearning that self-reliance allowed me to step into my true role as a Director—focusing on the big picture and empowering others to own their results. It shifted my perspective from being the ‘engine’ of the business to being the ‘architect’ of it.
