We recently connected with Maurice Sapp and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Maurice thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
First let me say, entrepreneurship looks really fun and cool from the outside looking in but, it is hard as hell. There’s so many ups and downs and you have to be mentally and emotionally prepared to roll with the punches. I started creating lanes for myself back when I had a corporate job. I built contacts, created relationships, and even started producing while I had the security of my day job. One of the most important things I did was pay it forward and help as many people as I could. This was partly because I love to see and help people bring their visions to life but also because it creates community and inspires people to want to help you succeed as well.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect or maybe i’ll say the two most rewarding aspects of being a creative are the feelings of accomplishment for every achievement, and the control of my time. When you’re a creative or entrepreneur, you can celebrate every accomplishment like the super bowl if you like. This positive re-enforcement is a healthy way to drive yourself to the next milestone. Also you get to steer your career or creativity in the direction you want it to go in. Having control of your time is possibly the most rewarding thing I have ever experienced. You decide where and when to move, you set your meetings, you set your timelines & deadlines. Really when you control your time, you become the master of your universe… as long as you can afford it. lol

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
What really drives my creative journey for people to look at me and say, he was the most incredible resource they could have, and for them to know that I did it my way. I want to do it my way! I did it the traditional way, it was great but, it wasn’t for me. For the last eight years I’ve been doing it my way and I could not be happier!
