We were lucky to catch up with Matt Rogers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Matt, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
After I graduated from college with a Biology degree, I continued my education obtaining licenses and certification for the medical field. I started a job with a group of Neurosurgeons in Macon, GA but gigged on the weekend, traveling and playing at whatever clubs would have me. I started my band in Macon, and we traveled all over the southeast, returning home on Sunday evening. My medical job started at 7am, so there was little to no rest at all on the weekend. I had begun traveling to Nashville taking meetings, writing, and networking with other songwriters and artists.
When I realized that I wanted to pursue music as a full-time profession, I started saving money, and in 2015, I moved to Nashville to do just that.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always been moved by music. Even as a small child, my parents would tell me I would sing before I could talk real well. They always had music playing for as long as I can remember and from every genre. I sang in the children’s choir at church, the school choir in middle and high school, literary events, and received a partial scholarship for college choir. It was in college when I started to write songs.
After college, I began to perform in local shows. I was working in the medical field in Macon, GA, and I put together a band. We started playing locally and eventually performing further and further out. I also began traveling to Nashville to take meetings and write with other songwriters. I realized at that time, if I intended to pursue music full-time, I need to plan to move there. I began saving my money, and moved to Nashville.
When people hear my music, I want them to be able to relate to it. My songs are inspired by real life. I write about what I know.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
This business is not for the faint of heart. You get to hear “No” more times than you can count. As long as you believe in yourself and what you are doing, the “No” doesn’t take the wind out of your sails.. It takes a strong support system. I am so fortunate to have that, and I know a lot of people who don’t. I feel blessed.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Meeting people at my shows and getting to hear their stories. Meeting and writing with other songwriters. Looking for inspiration in everything and being inspired by the smallest thing at the most unlikely time.
