We recently connected with Martye Hickman and have shared our conversation below.
Martye, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Normally, I’d talk about my seasoning company, SavaThaFlavaLLC during interviews, but I’d like to introduce a new business venture. This new company is called Golden Palms! I came up with the name because I know how to do a lot of things ! Some one once told me that “everything I touch turns into gold!” So when I started my exterior home refresh career, I named the business “Golden Palms” hands of gold. Besides, I love palm trees.

Martye, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into this industry simply because I love being outside and I enjoy making the outside of a residential area look better or custom. What I do is take a vision and paint the picture the best of my ability. It’s a really fun job and I’ve made a lot of families happy along the way !

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
This business actually started off as a hobby. When I moved to Memphis, Tn with my fiancé, I noticed the lot our house was on needed “sprucing up”. She stated that she wanted a rock bed seating area in the back corner of the back yard, we both enjoy the outdoors so I figured I could do that easy. When I looked at the spot it was plain, I didn’t know where to start I just began to make a circle shape with my weed-eater. After clearing the weeds I visited our local hardware store. Picking the material for the job was fun to me, I doordashed for the money to complete the “DIY project”! Once I started the job became easy to finish. After I completed the rock bed I saw some outdoor furniture my lady had already, so I put it on the rocks over there. Added a grill and it turned out beautiful! The next night i realized it was way to dark to sit out there at night, even though we had a fire pit! So, I added one box of string lights. That wrapped the area up in a bow along with a few plants. After that I started doing little refresh jobs to the property!

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
After posting my first at home job online, my followers loved it. I got 100 times more views and 50% more likes and comments. I decided to make a business out of it after the inquiries. I had no tools and at the time I was driving a sports car. I had to door dash and work my day job to come up with the capital I needed to start this job. After raising about 2,000 dollars I started buying tools and found an old truck to fix up. It was a long unpredictable road ! Now I have clients in Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee!
