We were lucky to catch up with Martinez Finney recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Martinez, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
To be honest, my feelings oscillate. On some days, I’m exhilarated, chasing my dream with a zeal that’s unparalleled. On others, the weight of the challenges threatens to pull me down, and I contemplate giving it all up. The unpredictability of life hit me hard when I lost my full-time job almost a year ago. The unexpected termination, without any rationale, plunged me into a deep depression.
However, through prayer, and bolstered by the unwavering support of my family and friends, I found the strength to pull myself up and immerse in my true passion. I’m particularly grateful for my supportive wife, who’s been my rock throughout this journey.
There are moments when I’m tempted to return to the conventional working world, setting my dreams aside for stability. And yes, there are naysayers who cast doubt, advising me to pursue a traditional job and benefits like a 401k. They question my vision, but they’re unaware of my true calling and destiny.
Almost a year later, without a full-time job, my resolve remains unshaken. I won’t pretend it’s been a breeze – it’s incredibly challenging. Yet, with diligence and determination, I continue to push forward.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Martinez Finney, a native of Macon, GA, but Charleston, SC has been home since I was 10. A proud graduate of Charleston Southern University, I lead a dynamic life. From long walks, gym sessions, basketball games, to mastering boxing techniques, I revel in physical activities. Beyond the athletic endeavors, I am an avid movie enthusiast, sports fan, and traveler. My thirst for knowledge and inspiration is often quenched by the audiobooks I delve into.
The talented Chadwick Boseman ignited my ardor for acting. My ambition is to step into major film roles, aiming to inspire others just as I was. For me, acting isn’t just an art; it’s an avenue to be a beacon of hope for young souls searching for guidance.
Though I’m still navigating the realms of modeling and acting, each day is a lesson. My journey so far has had its peaks and troughs. My parents’ divorce when I was four left an indelible mark, but it also instilled an unstoppable drive within me. Watching my single mother sacrifice to raise my brother and me has been a driving force. The memories of her sacrifices resonate deeply, fueling my determination. In my bleakest moments, heroes in my headphones provided solace, inspiring dreams of a brighter future for my family and me. Those heroes not only gave me hope but shaped my resilience.
With an indomitable spirit, passion, ambition, and a dash of zeal, I’m on a mission to achieve greatness. Because for me, the idea of failure simply doesn’t exist. My vision is clear: to be a ray of hope, demonstrating that even in the darkest times, dreams remain attainable.
I am steadfast in my quest to make a mark in the entertainment industry and touch lives positively.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I firmly believe that those who aren’t inherently creative often struggle to grasp the vision of those who are. To be creative is to see potential and beauty where others might only see chaos or disorder. But to me, creativity isn’t solely reserved for the arts; it’s an exercise of the imagination. Whether one envisions a captivating artwork, composes a soulful melody, conceives a revolutionary business idea, or simply dreams of reuniting a fragmented family around the Thanksgiving table after many years apart — they are all manifestations of a creative mind. Creativity, in its essence, bridges the gap from imagination to a clear vision.
However, a word of caution: Be discerning about who you allow to critique or assess your vision. It’s a painful reality that sometimes, the very people closest to you — even family — can inadvertently stifle or dismiss your dreams. Just because someone is related to you doesn’t automatically grant them the clarity or insight to understand your unique vision. So, guard your dreams, especially from those who may not have the vision to truly see them.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a creative is sharing this journey with my wife, friends, and family. Their unwavering support not only fuels my drive but also brings immense joy as they take pride in seeing me pursue my dreams. Additionally, I find profound satisfaction in inspiring others, particularly the youth, and encouraging them to chase their dreams and aspirations. Being in a position to positively influence and uplift others is a true privilege.
