We recently connected with Marquita Gipson and have shared our conversation below.
Marquita, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The story behind Girls that Glitter Inc, is simple… It’s obedience! There are times I still cannot believe the work we are doing. Founding a non-profit organization was not a long-life dream or something I had ever thought of. For my 30th birthday celebration, I wanted to engage in a community service project celebrating confidence and self-love for FREE with 30 girls from the community. This was to be a one-time event; God was like NO! Give these girls who and what people have given to you!! I am a product of mentorship. Mentorship matters, it’s impactful, it’s a journey to relationships and success. This is what we are about.

Marquita, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Who are we! We are Girls that Glitter Inc. We are the preeminent organization that assists young ladies in growing confidence, self-esteem, and leadership among themselves. Girls that Glitter empowers young ladies to create their own opportunities for life success, through contributing to the community as young leaders guided by mentors, dedicated to expanding their horizons. Our Mission is to Encourage, Empower and Motivate young ladies in boosting their confidence,
self-esteem, and self-love.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Sure! Social media is how we started. It’s where we recruit, it’s where we network and it’s where we showcase the beauty of mentorship. On our social media platforms, we model the mentorships based on mission and population of ladies we serve. We celebrate the accomplishments of our mentees, mentors and the organization as a whole. We also bring awareness to our platform to help motivate, support and advocacy. If I could give advice, it would be simply do things at your pace. Don’t get easily caught up on comparing your business and organization to others. Do things at your own pace! Lastly, never be afraid to reach out and ask others for help and support.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Maintaining a team in the non-profit sector is challenging. This is something we are still navigating. Be patient and the right people who are willing to help grow the mission and organization will be dedicated to it. Burn out comes quickly when the team does not align. We are working to increase our appreciation with not just leaders but, volunteers and our moms as they are the most important people in our organization. Without our Moms, we have no Gal Pals. Don’t give up, the right people will come along side to help push your mission.
