We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mark Caravaggio a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mark, appreciate you joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I moved quite organically through this process. I used to DJ part-time for fun. There were many signs in my old corporate career that led to me deciding that the corporate life just wasn’t for me. When this all came to a head, I literally quit my old life for a new one – it was a massive risk at the time, but looking back, it was what enabled me to become so passionate about this business. I was all in!
I had worked with other DJ companies, and have (mostly) found that they were sales-driven and not heart-driven. I had dreams of creating a heart-driven business, taking care of couples at a super high level, and potentially having a happy team I could call my own.
When I first launched my business full-time (circa 2011), I had no idea what I was getting myself into. For example, at the time, there were mostly only Saturday weddings available in my area, and obviously I couldn’t be at every single one of these. It became clear to me that I needed to build a team when I was turning away more business than I was receiving. That changed everything.
I was never in a rush to build a team. I wanted to ensure I had the right humans and talent available. The process of “letting go”, meaning have other DJs represent my team at weddings, was brand new to me, and this wasn’t easy for me to do. This took a lot of soul searching to understand how to approach having a team, managing them, DJing myself, and ensuring we had a quality product over everything. So many ups & downs over the years, but it’s been a brilliant and beautiful ride.
Mark, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I’m Mark Caravaggio, owner-operator at inTUNE Events. We provide DJ, MC, and Wedding Planning services to couples who are looking to be taken care of on another level.
We always emphasize the importance of us removing stress from the wedding planning experience. So much is left for couples to figure out, even though they haven’t been through this process before. We want to be a go-to vendor they can count on. This goes far outside of DJ Services.
I’m super proud that I’ve been able to build an evolved brand where we align with partners who understand what we offer, how we’re a unique offering in the industry, and are easy to work with.
Having not one but two weddings planners on our team has transformed what we offer in terms of our extremely detailed approach. Both ‘type a’ couples and laid back couples alike appreciate that we meet them where they’re at, and most importantly, every single important detail is captured in advance of their special day so they can be present and appreciate every moment.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
A few key areas I’d say:
1) Consistency: Whether it was myself or another member of the team at an event, we showed up with our professional hats on, made connecting with others a priority, and most importantly taking care of our clients at the highest level.
2) Client-care: From our first connection chat until after the wedding, our goal is to provide the highest level of client care possible. Check-ins, support calls, great communication, and consistently showing up with professionalism. This is what it’s all about for us.
3) Being present at events myself: When growing my business, I was present at so many events myself. It was part of my approach in building my brand from nothing to something. I gained some valuable industry friends along the way, and we started to get referred by a lot of different vendors who saw us perform at weddings. It was amazing to see the progress over the years.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Industry Partnerships
When couples tour wedding venues, this is often the beginning of their planning journey. Venues will often refer industry vendors like myself, vendors they know will take care of their clients. This is the beginning of a trusted partnership!
