We were lucky to catch up with Mardia Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.

Mardia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later

Honestly, I wish I had the guts to start my skin care brand much younger, I think I would be further along by now if I did. However, over the years I have learned a lot more about the ins and outs of business I didn’t know years ago. So starting it later that what I should’ve might have been a good thing.

Mardia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Simply Beauty Co. is a black owned, vegan, cruelty-free skin care line based out of Miami FL. I got into this industry because I always struggled to find products that worked well with my sensitive skin, when I started using my products and my skin improved people began asking me what I use; so I began to sell it. I think what sets my brand apart from other brands is how down to earth and connected to its consumer base it is. I’m always accepting critics from my customers on how to improve their experience. I’m most proud of the way my business has transformed in a year from quality of the product, packaging, customer base.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

A lesson I had to unlearn was stop trying to think that I know it all; know what’s best for my customers, visuals, etc. I had to learn to accept people’s criticisms and see where they were coming from.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?

To fund my business I started working more than one job and put money as aide weekly until I met the goal I wanted to be at to begin the process.
