We were lucky to catch up with Jada Campbell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jada, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I have been a licensed cosmetologist since June 2011, fresh out of high school, working under my beautician, Pamela Hall, Desired Images II. She took me under her wing when I was in cosmetology school learning how to be a shampoo technician (that is where you make your tips). I learned so much working with Mrs. Pam from relaxer, semi-permanent, permanent colors etc, it was honestly the greatest experience and rushed me to pass my test on the first round. Of course, once I graduated and summer vacation came to an end, I went off to college like most graduates do and just like that, cosmetology was put on the back burner. I only knew about hair in the beauty industry not knowing there was more than just that, plus I never researched anything more than hair.
I became a college drop-out and decided to take a change of pace and go into the Air Force. Again, Mrs. Pam being prior military, she helped me on that journey along with my dad and a few others. I left for basic training on March 17, 2015, shortly followed by tech school for Security Forces for three months and then being stationed in Minot, North Dakota. Even though I was away from home and barely saw my family, I gained a new family that I hold dear to my heart and have their ongoing support til this day. The best thing about being stationed in Minot AFB, was I met my husband, had my daughter and my passion for using my cosmetology license came back full force. Instead it was for eyelash extensions, not even hair, and at that point, I did everything I could to research, learn, take notes and everything to soon start my journey.
We relocated to Houston, Texas in 2019, my husband and I scrapped up our last few dollars from our income tax and I signed up for my first lash class for classic eyelash extensions at iHeart Lash Studio. Every instructor I had in this process have been the best and most supportive EVER! I opened up an office space, down the hall from where I worked with Mrs. Pam and gained some clients from the beauty salon for the stylist. I was able to promote my business to all the clients, and do a service for anyone if they needed it right then and there. I made myself heavily available for anyone that wanted an appointment with me, my daughter was in daycare from 6:30AM to 6:30PM. I bounced between the beauty shop to my lash shop, and did that until 2020, when COVID hit. I was pregnant with my son at the time, right when I was about to renew my lease, everything shutdown in Houston, so I had no choice but to continue my education at home and put a halt to taking clients.
Once my son was born in August, I decided to get back into the swing of things and start back doing lashes and practicing again prior to taking clients. I was offered a position working at Kish Elaine Holistic Spa and Wellness to do lashes and learn other services such as waxing, facials, body conturing, etc. But I knew my heart and main focus was growing in the lash industry and adding on more services, but in permanent makeup. I gained a good amount of clientele working in the spa and getting paid commission. In the beginning of 2022, I decided to invest in myself and take an ombre powder brow course with Artistry by Zuri and a mega volume course in Austin with LashGuy Pro.
April 2022, I invested more into myself and formed my LLC for JNUDE AESTHETICS, moved into my suite at Salon Lofts – Washington Heights, May 2022. If I had to do it all over again, I would honestly want it to go exactly how it did with the same people that on this journey with me. It believe everything happens on God’s timing, and I am where he wants me to be, my story is not over….it is just beginning…so enjoy the ride. :)
Jada, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the beauty industry starting in high school, my school district offered a technical program that you could take the last 3 classes starting in your junior year to senior year. I achieved my cosmetology license a week or so after I graduated from high school in 2011, but prior to my cosmetology license, I was working in a hair salon to gain experience in the field.
After returning home from the military, I researched eyelash extensions, which was something exciting to do outside of hair and my passion for that side of the industry grew. I love being a listening ear for my clients, from work, relationships, self-care, pre and postpartum, I am always there for them. My clients grow from that to being family, when they come into my space, I want them to be themselves, take off the stressors of life and come pamper themselves.
I have now added along with eyelash extensions (classics, hybrid, volume and mega volume), ombre powder brows (semi-permanent makeup), brow waxing and henna tint. I am working on adding more permanent makeup services to my portfolio like lip blushing, lip neutralization and eyeliner, that is to come later on. I am most proud of being able to pick back up where I left off after COVID temporarily closed by shop prior to this one opening up. In that time frame, I spent time with my family, focused on growing when I got back open, and building a new foundation. Things have changed from 2019 to 2022, but one thing that always stays true is maximizing my clients (present and future) experience when they enter JNUDE AESTHETICS LLC.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Honestly, the best source of new clients for me has been word of mouth, it is an old marketing technique, but it holds true til this day. I offer incentives to my clients that spread the word of my business and services to friends, family members, strangers, EVERYONE. The fact that they love my services, personality and vibe so much to refer someone new to me, why shouldn’t I give back what I receive. I LOVE my clients.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
The way I keep in touch with my clients is after their appointments, I send a follow up message (text or email) to my clients seeing how their appointment with me was and leave a way for communication if they need anything prior to their next appointment. I offer loyalty stamps digitally through a company called YOLLTY, so once they collect stamps, they receive $20 off their next service. When a client refers someone to me, both individuals receive $10 off their next visit, if they refer 5 clients and all those clients book, my client just received $50 off their next visit. Even with google reviews, you receive $10 off your next visit when you leave a google review. I am currently working on birthday rewards too, I love giving back to my clients.
