We recently connected with Marcy Rodsky and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Marcy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
The first time I earned as a working musician was when I booked my first gig in a local roadhouse outside of Ft. Worth. The guitar player was friends with the bartender, so she booked us. We did a full night of I-IV-V’s because that’s all they could play. The audience was completely indifferent which was fortunate for us. Thankfully, they did not pummel us with longnecks! The client was happy that she could bag the bartender and I was thrilled to have my first gig!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m just a songwriter from Dallas….. EASTSIDE! I was able to write music when I partnered with Dallas’s favorite guitar man, Dave Burris. Once we began to play in 2005, we stayed booked several times a week. This allowed us to create and develop our own sound and build a relationship of musical trust where we trusted each other. This continues to this day. It is very difficult to find a creative fit for your personal vision. Creating is not a job of repeated exercises. It is a singular moment that is captured in its manifestation and then delivered to the audience. After that initial moment where there is collaboration, the song is sealed. The spark has settled, and it is time to cycle again. I am most proud of the two records of original music we recorded with CSP Records, especially “Deep Ellum”. I hope our song “Deep Ellum” becomes a modern-day anthem of the city we love. I want followers and agents to understand that each member of this band is deeply entrenched in the local music scene. Miss Marcy & her Texas SugarDaddy’s are part of the tapestry that creates the unmistakable “Dallas sound”.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is the sense of community in the Dallas music scene.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The mission driving my creative journey is my survival. I don’t know why, but I have to do this. I am not even myself if I do not have gigs booked. I love to be onstage with the band and to entertain. We play some music, have some laugs, make some memories. This is my life-blood. Who am I even without my gigs? I hope they never end. Dallas, thank you for continuing to book me steadily since 2005. We thank you and look forward to many, many more gigs together.
