We were lucky to catch up with Marc Lohse recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marc, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
At MDH we show our customers that we appreciate and value them in all the little things
we do day in and day out. We work hard to provide daily communications. We are
transparent with the budget and billing. We are proactive with our subcontractors to
make sure we are ready for them and that their scope of work is clear. We are present
daily to ensure the work is being properly executed. We go to great lengths to walk by
their side to help them make design selections and stay close to guide them at each
step throughout the process.
One of our favorite little things we do to start the project off on the right foot is to have a
golden shovel ceremony on their lot. Some of our clients have waited many years to
achieve this dream. It’s such a momentous occasion and should be celebrated! We walk
the property, look at the surveying stakes, explain how the home will sit on the property,
and then let the clients throw the first shovel of dirt to signify the groundbreaking. Then
we’ll have some coffee and treats to celebrate! Our clients leave that ceremony feeling
that they are well cared for from the start.

Marc, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Over 25 years ago I started in Indiana as a project manager for a high-volume
production builder. Building homes for myself has always been a dream of mine and I so
appreciated the knowledge I gained from working with some incredible builders and
mentors. I knew that I wanted to start my own company at some point and work directly
with clients to build their dream homes. Around 15 years ago I felt that it was the right
time to start Marc David Homes. What a ride the last 15 years have been! It started with
just me and now with a team of 10 people, we love to collaborate, while building around
8 to 10 custom homes a year.
We are a one stop shop, so to speak. We can take a client all the way from lot
purchasing through architecture and design, through the entire construction process, as
well as interior design. We strive to make a complex process easy and more cost
effective than if they went through the process in a different manner. We are most proud
of the stunning homes, but more importantly, the wonderful relationships we have built
with clients along the way.

How’d you meet your business partner?
Dan and I met a number of years ago while working for another builder together. I was
in the field managing the construction and he worked on the front end with
preconstruction and permitting. While getting to know each other, we found that we both
had a lot in common from our faith, down to how to build a quality home and how to
treat people with respect and integrity. At this point, we have now been working together
for over five years. We compliment each other very well and make a great team. Marc
David Homes would not be the same without Dan, and I look forward to many years of
working together at MDH.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Slow and steady. At first, we really just loved showing off the beautiful work and
amazing locations that we build at. Then we learned about using hashtags to expand
our reach. We also started using short form videos and some longer form educational
videos. Our growth has been mostly organic. We have had a lot of clients come to us
because they have seen our work on social media. It’s also a great way to have people
“get to know us” a bit better and to help build trust. One other benefit is that it has been
a great place to meet other builder “friends”. We can collaborate and learn from each
other and help make a better name for an industry that sometimes can get a bad rap.
There are great people out there building great homes!
