We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maggie Hernandez . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maggie below.
Hi Maggie , thanks for joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Being a business owner has always been a dream of mine. I truly am blessed to be able to do what I love and call it my own. Prior to becoming self-employed I did work in a corporate setting job. Thinking of going back to a regular job was something that had never crossed my mind until the pandemic occurred. Being self-employed and being informed that you will not be able to work due to a world wide pandemic was very scary and stressful to say the least. I did have a moment of self-doubt and wondered if I had chosen the right path. At the moment I don’t think anyone knew what was coming in the days or weeks ahead. The first couple of days I did wish I had a regular job with a steady income. I never voiced those fears. I truly do feel that those moments of uncertainty made me stronger. I began to sell lash products so that my clients could benefit from. I came up with ideas to create merchandise to sell while we were in quarantine. That itself motivated and kept me going to push through until we were given the okay to reopen our businesses. Having the motivation to create and sell while being without a job reassured me that I was still headed in the right direction.
Maggie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a lash artist located in Allen, Texas. I have been lashing for approximately 5 years. My job is to enhance the natural beauty of my clients while providing a safe place for them to relax and feel pampered. I take pride in my work ethic and in providing services that focus on the health of the clients natural lashes. I invest in courses at least once a year to continue to polish my skills and provide the newest trends for my clients. I take pride in the customer service I provide all of my clients. I always treat everyone I meet as friends and family. Along my journey I have met so many wonderful clients that have become true friends. That to me is something I take pride that I make my clients feel so comfortable in trusting me not only with the beauty services I provide but in being their confidant.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Lashing was supposed to be a weekend/ summer job for me. I had envisioned it as a side hustle. However the more I became invested in trying to learn how to become a lash artist the more I fell in love with the entire process. I always knew I wanted to have a business of my own but I never knew what my passion was. It was while going to school, taking models, working late shifts to promote myself that I found my passion. I realized that I enjoyed doing what I did. Working late or making sacrifices did not bother because I knew the consistency of my work would only make better. I can honestly say that working hard allowed me to be where I am now. When I hear new clients tell me that they have heard wonderful things about me or that they have traveled a great distance to see me that makes me so proud and I know that what I have done and continue to do will only bring greatness.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resilience is a key factor to success that is needed to be a business owner. Being able to bounce back from failures and setbacks is what makes you resilient. I feel that since the very beginning of my lash journey I have had to really show myself more than anything how important it is to stay positive, to learn from past mistakes and always keep going forward no matter how difficult times may get. Going back to the story of how we had to close our business due to the pandemic that helped me execute what being resilient meant in my life. The uncertainty of not knowing when we would be able to return back to work did cause sleepless nights. However during those many sleepless nights I was able to come up with creative ideas on how to continue to push forward. There was absolutely no room for failure in my mind. I took it as a time to put into practice what I believe in which is the power of gratitude, manifestations and prayer. Being able to practice all three gave me confidence and self determination that things would be okay. Of course being surrounded by supportive and positive loved ones, family, friends and clients is what keeps me going as well.
