We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Madolyn Worrall. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Madolyn below.
Madolyn , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success can look different from person to person and, for me, it can look different from day to day. Some days it can be achieving a personal or financial goal I have set for myself. Other days it may be witnessing the growth and success of my peers. It has also been as simple as making someone feel their best.
As a business owner who is self-employed, it’s important for me to feel successful in multiple areas of my life. I am always striving to positively impact the people around me whether it’s a new client, the community or friends and family.
I realized that after leaving the corporate setting, I had to be my own motivation, passion and drive. I had to find ways to continually grow and inspire myself. One important lesson I learned early on (from my Dad) was to set goals and reward yourself when you’ve reached them. No matter how big or small. When you reward yourself, your brain loves that positive reinforcement and strives to achieve another goal for the reward. On the other hand, if you do not reward yourself, you won’t work as hard the next time you have a goal. So be your biggest supporter because when you’re on your own, no one else will reward your successes.
Another lesson I’ve learned is to not let other people’s success interfere with yours. Try not to compare your journey and growth to others because everyone has a different story and path. Take the time to celebrate your victories and keep aspiring to learn and grow.

Madolyn , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Since I was little, creating art was and has always been my language. I knew that creating was my outlet and what I enjoy most. From taking art classes at the library to enriched AP classes all throughout school, I found that textures, colors, shapes and tools all came naturally to me.
With multiple artistic platforms to express creativity, I found that doing hair and makeup was a great canvas to create on. So in 2007, I started my beauty journey by attending Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School in Columbus, Ohio. At that time, I was also working for the Luxury Beauty Retailer, Sephora, as a Makeup Artist where I later became a District Senior Artistry trainer. My teaching career took off and I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the development and growth of the team.
Within my 10 years with Sephora, I gained vast knowledge of working with products and brands, as well as, multiple application methods on a variety of clients. With that knowledge, I decided to take a leap of faith and start my own freelance makeup business called MM Creative Studios LLC.
I specialize in Advanced Makeup Artistry and provide services at my Studio space called Love & Luxe Co., as well as, luxury onsite services primarily for the wedding industry in Columbus, Ohio.
My passion comes from creating beautiful, naturally enhanced makeup designs that make women feel empowered, comfortable, and confident in their own skin.
On top of providing makeup services, I also offer Permanent Cosmetics which includes Microblading and Brow Shading, as well as, Permanent Jewelry, a hot new trend in the jewelry/accessories world.
Having multiple creative outlets has allowed me to service and connect with new clients who have a variety of needs.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I was working for Sephora as a Makeup Artist while attending Cosmetology school and during that time I started doing bridal makeup on the side. Sephora was investing in my career and I was seizing any opportunity to obtain as much knowledge as possible. This led me to becoming an Artistry Trainer for the District which was incredibly rewarding! While teaching a course on advanced Bridal Makeup, I found myself falling even more in love with the wedding scene and all of the beautiful details that go into bridal makeup. A fun side note- the first wedding I did makeup for, I met my husband at the reception! So weddings have always held a special place in my heart! :) The passion I had to start my own business was backed up with the knowledge I acquired and with those two things, I started making my side hustle my main hustle.
As I found myself being pulled into the wedding industry and out of retail, I had feelings of guilt for leaving my work family behind. I was leaving a stable income while also dealing with self-doubt.
With the support of my friends and family, I took time to network and reconnect with other freelancers for guidance. I regained confidence in myself knowing that what I had to offer the industry was better than what I was seeing and experiencing. I led with integrity, compassion and a willingness to nurture and support others. My positive energy attracted like minded people and with that, I’m able to be a part of a thriving, wonderful community.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of my key strengths is my ability to adapt to change. Everything around us is constantly evolving and in order to learn and grow, pivoting and adapting to change is a necessity.
A lot of the time, change can be difficult because it feels uncomfortable and unfamiliar, but it can also be the nudge we need in order to continue to grow.
In March of 2020, the world felt an enormous, unexpected change that we all had to, in someway, adapt to. As a freelance business working in the wedding industry, it was a difficult time due to numerous cancellations.
I knew I had to pivot by taking my business in a different direction with the services I was offering and how I was building my clientele.
I took advantage of the shut down and used that time to take classes, learn a new craft and become a certified Permanent Cosmetic Artist.
Would I have added on this new service without the unforeseen circumstances forcing me to pivot? Perhaps. But what I can say that I’m most proud of is my resilience and ability to adapt to road blocks in order to problem solve.
