We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Madelyn King. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Madelyn below.
Madelyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I have always loved to sing, but I did not know where to start when it came to learning the technical side of music. I only got to really understanding music later in college. I definitely wish that I started taking singing lessons sooner, and that I started networking in the music world earlier on. Taking vocal lessons improved my capabilities significantly, and being in creative spaces pushed me out of my comfort zone. I began creating works of much greater quality. I do believe that having a solid work ethic and being good at talking to the right people are essential skills for this industry. I have faced many obstacles during the time I have pursued music such as untrustworthy connections, financial constraints, and my studies.

Madelyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I always looked up to pop stars that would sing and dance, and I found myself wanting to follow in their footsteps. So, I began dancing at around 16 years old, and I ended up being competitive for several years. I have competed at World of Dance as well as other national competitions. As I continued my dance journey, I ended up making some helpful musical connections that lead me down the path of pursuing my dreams of being a pop artist. I have focused on bettering my performance skills, songwriting capabilities, and overall creating a sound for myself. Through this, I have been fortunate enough to build a team that has faith in me. Now that I have gathered the pieces I need, I plan on telling stories through my music that will hopefully resonate with the right audiences.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I originally thought that the most rewarding part of music was seeing it all come together. I craved that feeling of having choreography hit a fully finished song. Now, I think the most rewarding part is definitely witnessing people enjoy my work. Seeing a reaction online where people express that they love my song has been the most fulfilling experience ever, even if it’s still on a small scale. I genuinely want nothing more than to connect to my audience!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Perfectionism can be your biggest downfall. I always used to pride myself in the fact that I am perfectionistic, and sometimes I still do, but I have learned that it can slow down your progress. If you focus too hard on refining the details over and over, you’ll never end up putting anything out.
