We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lynsey Gass a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lynsey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Knowing that I have always wanted to be in the beauty industry, coupled with my love of helping women look and feel their best, AND my mission of encouraging women to stay out of the tanning bed the desire to open my own spray tanning business started. I put it off for a while but the idea and desire kept growing until what I can only imagine was the Lord put me in touch with a friend of a friend’s friend (truly crazy how the Lord works) that I was able to get more information about a certification program that was the foundation of building my business.
I struggled with the idea for a short period and decided to go for it. After the program, lots of long talks with other artists, and discussions with my accountant among others. I opened my books praying I would have a single client. Since then I have had fully booked weeks, met new friends, and further fallen in love with this industry.
It wasn’t (& still isn’t) always butterflies and rainbows. There are days of doubt, continual lessons learned and continuing education, late nights and trial and error. Through it all I know I have an amazing husband encouraging me, amazing circle of other artists to lean on, and amazing clients that I am blessed to be on their beauty team.
This is Studio Glow. Where all bodies, all backgrounds, all experience levels, and all stories are welcomed and appreciated. My tent is a safe space for venting, sharing, or simply relaxing while you are experiencing the luxury of a hand-sprayed, airbrushed glow.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a former pageant participant and bikini competitor I have always loved getting full glam from hair and makeup to spray tan. I have always loved the beauty industry. During this time I was going to the tanning bed (I know, very bad) and spending every minute I could in the sun. One day, thankfully, my aunt noticed a spot on my leg and suggested I go to get it checked out. Of course, I knew I was ‘fine’ but did it anyway. The doctor told me I was not to leave her office until I had the spot removed and turns out she was right. It was a spot of skin cancer. Although caught very early and completely removed, that moment has stuck with me.
Since then I have always encouraged people to stay away from the tanning bed. The idea to open my spray tanning business has been in the back of my mind for years. Battling my own anxiety and negative thoughts about actually doing this held me back for a while. Until it almost fell into my lap. The Lord truly opened every door needed for me to get connected with the most influential trainer and mentors.
I love helping women feel not only comfortable but confident when they leave my tent. One of the things that I pride myself on is making every single lady who steps into my tent feel as comfortable as possible. It’s always so fun to me seeing my client’s face light up when they step out and see their new sun kissed glow. Attention to detail is my number one priority.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I have to say word of mouth has been extremely helpful for me growing my clientele. In the very beginning I was blessed with a few clients who trusted me with their business. From there I have to say close to 90% of my clients who book say they have seen one of my clients and want a similar experience.
It feels amazing to hear they want to book based on my work they see out in the community.
My main goal is to make each client feel their best by providing a detailed spray tan every time.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I’m thankful to say that the majority of new clients come from word of mouth. Sure a few people have followed my social media pages however, most new clients are friends with a previous client. Which is an incredible feeling.
