We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Luna Wang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Luna below.
Hi Luna, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
When I worked at Amazon Web Services as a UX designer, I designed AI/ML products for enterprise customers. One project I led was called SageMaker Universal Notebook. At that time, our customers were struggling with frequent context switching and months of complex setup during their machine learning workflows, which resulted in very slow collaboration. To solve problems and provide intuitive design solutions for them, I conducted workshops with key stakeholders to get team alignment on the project vision and direction in the early design stage. I used design thinking methods to help the team define core priorities and the product roadmap. As the design evolved, I showcased strong ownership and customer obsession by exploring multiple design solutions and collaborating with product managers, engineers, and customers. To meet customers’ commitment in time, I managed UX tradeoffs, balancing launch deliverables, resources, and usability.
The project debuted at the AWS annual conference and received high recognition from the industry. The project benefited a wide variety of customers, ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies. By creating a more integrated, collaborative, and flexible environment for ML development, I effectively optimized workflows for our core users and improved efficiency by 500%. It saves our customers significant time, they can develop high-quality machine learning models much more easily at a lower cost. This led to enhanced productivity and increased revenue. Moreover, my innovations had a profound impact on the AI/ML industry by enabling faster development cycles and promoting best practices.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Luna Wang, a passionate user experience (UX) and interaction designer who embarked on this exciting journey in 2015. My career has been a rich tapestry of experiences, working with both renowned companies and innovative startups. This diverse professional path has taken me across international landscapes in Germany, the USA, and China, where I honed my design skills and learned to navigate and contribute to different cultural contexts. Specializing in AI/ML and emerging technologies, I have a solid academic foundation with a Master’s in Digital Media from New York University, which perfectly complemented my B.S. in Computer Science and B.A. in Industrial Design. This unique blend of education and global experience has empowered me to make a meaningful impact in my field, particularly in creating user-centric designs that resonate on a global scale.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
For many UX designers, the overarching goal is to create meaningful and seamless experiences for users. To me particularly, I believe design can do good in everyday life. I focus on solving real-world problems and improving people’s work and lives through user-friendly and intuitive designs. Design is also fluid. I embrace a mindset of continuous learning and improvement, constantly refining designs based on user feedback and emerging trends in technology and design.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a UX designer, I often work on projects that address real-world problems. There are two aspects that I feel are most rewarding. First, being able to solve these problems through creative and innovative design solutions can be immensely gratifying, especially when you receive positive feedback from users or see measurable improvements in key metrics, such as satisfaction scores and revenue contributions. Second, UX design is rarely a solo endeavor. I usually work with cross-functional teams of engineers, product managers, UX researchers, domain experts, and more. Sharing ideas, getting feedback, and collectively working towards a common goal can be rewarding as well. Seeing how my design integrates seamlessly with other elements of a product or service and contributes to its overall success is a great feeling.
