We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Luis G. Moreno a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Luis G. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
I earned my first dollar as an artist for my distinctive “cute style” through a commission for the Main Event Talk Podcast. David Flores, the podcast’s creator, tasked me with creating a series of illustrations featuring cartoon versions of popular professional wrestling superstars of that era. These included icons such as AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, The New Day, and The Bullet Club. My artwork was prominently featured in various promotional materials, including T-shirts, newsletters, and even magazine covers. The recognition and exposure I gained from this project were a significant milestone in my artistic journey.
Luis G., before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hailing from The Bronx, New York, and now based in Miami, Florida, I am a digital artist with a passion for creating captivating artworks. In 2017, I embarked on an artistic journey by launching a dedicated Instagram account (@MorenoArtwork) exclusively for showcasing my creations.
My artistic prowess shines through my fan art, which encompasses a diverse range of subjects, including professional wrestlers, beloved superheroes, iconic films, and K-POP idols. Each piece is meticulously crafted to capture the essence of the characters and bring joy to fans worldwide.
Initially, I hesitated to share my artworks on a public platform like Instagram, fearing criticism and unauthorized use of my creations. However, over time, I realized that many digital artists share similar concerns before venturing into the realm of social media. With a leap of faith and the belief that the potential benefits outweigh the risks, I took the plunge and have since cherished the positive outcomes of sharing my art with the world.
What truly sets me apart is my distinctive “cute style” of drawing. In 2021, I was honored to be recognized as an award winner in the prestigious DC FanDome art competition. My unique interpretation of the Justice League, rendered in my signature cute style, stood out among thousands of global submissions, capturing the attention of the Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics and comic book legend, Jim Lee. This accolade instilled an unwavering self-confidence in my abilities and solidified my appreciation for my distinctive artistic style.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
My motivation for creating art extends beyond financial gain. While I occasionally utilize creative financing methods for complex projects, I have recently discovered the joy of distributing some of my artwork free of charge. Whether through social media giveaways or at large-scale events such as conventions or concerts, I have personally witnessed the profound impact that physical art can have on individuals. The priceless reactions I have received upon creating “freebies” like stickers or prints reaffirm the transformative power of art.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is guided by a mission to produce art that transcends the limitations of language and age. I find great joy in collaborating on projects that showcase my unique artistic style to a worldwide audience. In recent years, I’ve witnessed the gradual realization of this goal through my involvement in international projects reaching diverse audiences across continents such as Europe, Asia, and South America, extending beyond North America.
