We recently connected with Lucy Pittroff and have shared our conversation below.
Lucy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In the marketing industry, especially for freelancers (like myself), creating a successful career requires a lot more than just sending over a deliverable and being “done”. Crafting a white glove experience, making clients feel like you’re part of their team, building trust and dependability, and not just being purely transactional are all the things that will set you apart from competitors and create loyal, long-term relationships. And given the inherently creative nature of marketing, it requires constant thinking outside the box, innovative problem-solving, and willingness to take risks—putting yourself & your brand out there.
And, on a more personal level, I’ve found that success requires being open to new perspectives, counting on yourself (& being a cheerleader for yourself), while also enjoying the journey, and having fun along the way.

Lucy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
In 2020, I started my freelance journey with a straightforward goal—explore my passion for branding and marketing…and take a risk. It started local (with no grand plan or thought-out business strategy might I add), but now I’ve worked with over 60 brands, from Cape Cod boutiques to global medical associations and Silicon Valley startups. I’ve worked solely through word of mouth since I started in 2020 and I like to think that my success can be credited to the passion I put behind all my work and the close relationships I create with every brand I work with.
No two days are the same for me @ Lucy Pittroff Studios; some days I’m on-site with clients for photoshoots or team meetings, other days I’m sitting in a local coffee shop finalizing a website refresh or strategizing email marketing plans for the quarter.
My services include Email Marketing, Copywriting, Website Design, Branding, Content Creation, Social Media, Graphic Design, SEO, and Affiliate Marketing. My promise with every project is to provide a tailored, hands-on experience that works for your brand & your team.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I get quite a few recurring questions about my career – “How do stay motivated?…If I was my own boss, I would take vacation every day.” “Are you ever nervous about not making ends meet?” “How do you have the confidence to put yourself out there with so much uncertainty?”
Here are my thoughts on that: First, I think of passion as motivation. I absolutely love what I do and that motivates me to wake up every day and work and learn and grow my skills. Second, uncertainty and mistakes do not have to be intrinsically negative. I’ve found that mistakes can lead to some of the most valuable insights and instead of being setbacks, they end up being stepping stones to some of the biggest improvements. I’ve learned to find inspiration out of uncertainty – not having a predefined path or clear answers really leaves me open to try new things and not feel limited.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
