Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Louis Robinson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Louis thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Coming up with the Idea for Robinson Dog Training was pretty simple. Since I am a Veteran K-9 Handler it seemed like a pretty natural fit. I attended one of the best K9 handler schools in the world and I am good with people so it was a no-brainer. With world-class instruction and a bright-eyed smile, the industry was my oyster. I started with obedience training for household pets then I expanded into more training niches like Protection, service, detections, and more. My unique background helps distinguish me from most other trainers and gives me the ability to handle the cases they can’t or won’t.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, my name is Louis W. Robinson and I served in the United States Air Force As a Military Working Dog Handler (I used to look for bombs). During my time in the military, I had the privilege of spending a good portion of my young adult life handling and training Military Working Dogs. The military’s version of police K-9’s and we did a lot of fun stuff including agility, patrol (bite-work), and scent detection. The best part, besides my dog, was working side by side with some of the greatest K-9 handlers in the world. In 2007, Robinson Dog Training was created and offered both basic and advanced training services to the general public. We started by specializing in training dog owners with working dog breeds like German Shepherds, Belgium Malinois, Dobermans, Rottweilers, Pitt Bulls, etc. who wanted advanced training or had behavioral challenges but then the small dog people started calling so we began accepting small non-working breeds too because everybody deserves a great dog. We love little tiny dogs. Over the next decade, I wrote and re-wrote my book F.I.D.O. Fundamentals In Dog Obedience which is in its 3rd Edition. Currently, it is used as a guide to teach students the “secret art” of dog training… haha. There is no secret art just basic psychology and practice. It helps to have someone guide you through the process and that is where we come in. At 1st things started slowly but word spread quickly and we experienced growth each year. I was taking cases the other guys refused to take on further developing my easy-to-understand training program. Eventually, I began to offer more services, and www.bugdogpro.com and www.servicedogfund.org and I even made a cool card game www.dastardlydog.com
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In the beginning, I was working a day job while I was building my business, it took a lot of hours and dedication, luckily for me none of the business models I have created required from any outside sources.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Life is full of opportunity, you have to be able to pivot at a moment’s notice and adapt to the changes, I always found multiple streams of revenue important in case one slows down. I am even working on getting my real estate license to add one more stream. Pivoting is good and can lead to exponential growth.
