We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lorelei Starbuck. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lorelei below.
Lorelei, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Weddings are a universal milestone in life. No matter one’s preferences, serious relationships often culminate in marriage, promising a steady revenue stream for those in the wedding business. Yet, the ways people choose to tie the knot vary drastically.
For years, traditional weddings held sway, but alongside them thrived a less conventional path to marital bliss: elopements and quickie ceremonies. This alternative, offering expedited and sometimes clandestine unions, has long been a fixture. My journey into this niche began with a spontaneous decision in Las Vegas.
My partner and I purchased a wedding chapel in Vegas, immersing ourselves in the whirlwind of short, sweet ceremonies. Conducting weddings every 15 minutes, we quickly became experts in the art of efficient nuptials.
Transitioning to Los Angeles, we saw an opportunity to serve the LGBTQ community by opening a chapel in West Hollywood. And then expanded our offerings to include beach elopements, a decision that resonated positively with our clients.
In 2016, we relocated to Austin, only to find a surprising gap in the market: no local service focused exclusively on elopements. Sensing a significant opportunity, we launched “Elope in Austin.” Starting modestly with just my partner and me, and later adding a professional photographer, our business flourished, doubling in size within six months.
Recognizing the potential, we scaled up. Today, eight years later, “Elope in Austin” stands as the largest and most trusted provider of elopements and micro weddings in the area.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those who may not have read about me before, I’m Lorelei Starbuck, the founder of Elope in Austin. My journey into the wedding industry began from a deep-seated passion for creating intimate, memorable experiences for couples looking to celebrate their love in a unique way. I started this business because I saw a gap in the market for personalized elopements and micro weddings that truly reflect the couple’s vision without the stress and expense of a traditional wedding.
Elope in Austin specializes in stress-free and affordable all in one wedding planning. We offer a variety of packages that include everything and are designed to simplify the wedding planning process, allowing couples to focus on what truly matters – their love and commitment to each other.
What sets us apart is our dedication to providing bespoke experiences tailored to each couple’s unique needs and desires. We take pride in our attention to detail, our creative approach to wedding planning, and our commitment to making every wedding day special and stress-free.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Running Elope in Austin has been an exhilarating journey, filled with countless beautiful moments, happy couples, and unforgettable weddings. But last year, my life took an unexpected turn when I encountered a health crisis. Suddenly, the path ahead seemed uncertain, and the business I had poured my heart into felt like it was slipping through my fingers. Feeling unsure I had to lean on my dedicated employees – Jessica, Sabrina and Sherie, and the rest of the team – who had become like family to me. They had always been there, supporting me, and now I needed to lean on them more than ever.
I made the difficult decision to step back from the day-to-day operations. It wasn’t easy to relinquish control, but I knew it was necessary. Jessica, with her meticulous organizational skills, took over the planning and coordination. Sabrina’s passion for sales took a weight off my shoulders and Sheri’s creativity on photography and social media were unmatched. Together, they formed an unstoppable trio. I stayed involved as much as I could, offering guidance and support from the sidelines. I watched in awe as my team not only maintained the high standards we had set but also brought fresh ideas and innovations to the table. They introduced new elopement packages and even launched a social media campaign that garnered an incredible response.
Despite the physical and emotional toll of my illness, I found strength in the resilience of my team and the unwavering support of the couples we served. Each successful wedding, every glowing review, and the joy on our clients’ faces became a beacon of hope for me.
Seeing the couple’s happiness and the flawless execution of the events was a reminder that Elope in Austin was in the best possible hands. I realized that this pivot, although born out of necessity, had allowed my team to truly shine. They had grown into their roles, taking on responsibilities with confidence and passion. Elope in Austin was no longer just my business; it had become a collaborative effort, a testament to the strength and unity of our team.
The experience has taught me the importance of trust, delegation, and the incredible power of a supportive team. Our business is stronger than ever, and I am filled with pride every time I see a couple’s dream wedding come to life, knowing that it is the result of our collective efforts. Running Elope in Austin and facing my health issue was one of the hardest challenges I’ve ever encountered, but it also brought out the best in all of us. It showed me that even in the darkest times, there is light to be found in the dedication, love, and resilience of those around us. And for that, I am eternally grateful.

Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it felt like the world had come to a standstill. For Elope in Austin, the impact was immediate and devastating. Weddings were postponed or canceled, venues closed their doors, and the future of our business was uncertain. With over $30,000 in bookings that we might have to refund, the very survival of Elope in Austin was at stake.
Our clients were heartbroken. Couples who had spent months planning their special day were suddenly faced with the prospect of indefinite postponement. Some were willing to reschedule, but others, unsure of what the future held, were requesting refunds. It was a financial nightmare that threatened to undo years of hard work and dedication.
The idea of the Chapel of Love was born out of necessity and a desire to keep love alive in the face of adversity. We moved an old chapel to a wedding venue and opened up for drive-up and two-person weddings. This allowed couples to celebrate their love safely and still have a memorable ceremony despite the restrictions. Communication was key. We reached out to every couple with a booked wedding, explaining the situation and offering rescheduling options or the new drive-up wedding service. We empathized with their frustration and disappointment, assuring them that we were committed to making their wedding dreams come true, even in these challenging times.
By offering these alternative wedding options, we were able to keep the business afloat. My team worked tirelessly to accommodate new dates, coordinate with vendors, and ensure that every couple felt supported and valued. Slowly but surely, we averted disaster. The drive-up weddings became popular, and word spread about our commitment to helping couples navigate the uncertainty of the pandemic. We even received media coverage, highlighting our innovative approach to keeping love alive during such a difficult time.
Reflecting on those tumultuous months, I am proud of how we adapted and persevered. The pandemic tested us in ways we could never have imagined, but it also brought out the best in our team and strengthened our resolve. We learned to think outside the box, to empathize deeply with our clients, and to find creative solutions in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.
Elope in Austin emerged from the pandemic not only intact but stronger and more resilient. We showed that even in the darkest times, love can find a way, and with dedication and compassion, we can overcome any obstacle. Our couples’ happiness remained our guiding light, and their joy on their wedding day made every effort worthwhile..
