Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lord Scorpio. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lord, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
Once I started college for Audio Engineering I was collaborating with classmates and friends outside of the classroom. I remember I would go over to a friend’s place everyday and a group of us would sit in his basement studio making so much music. It was in that basement and the basement of other musician friends that I found a passion for not only singing but songwriting.
During my second semester I started interning at a recording studio on Long Island learning studio tech in my first actual recording studio. With this new access to professional resources I started recording demos of songs I would write in my bedroom. A few days later the owner played one of my demos over the loudspeaker like lounge area music. A client who was prepping for a session pulls the owner aside to ask whose song was playing. The owner pointed my way and let the client know I was their new intern studying engineering. Almost immediately the client asked to buy the song, something I didn’t even know a person could do. After a brief conversation with the owner I decided to sell it and made my first $400.
I knew then that if I could make $400 as a fresh faced musician with no experience then I could make $4M.

Lord, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Lord Scorpio, a recording artist, songwriter and producer currently based in Brooklyn. I had the bug for music from a young age. My older sister had started taking guitar lessons and me being the copycat younger sister wanted to learn an instrument too. With a wish of becoming the next Alicia Keys I started taking piano lessons when I was 7 years old. At the time my mother, sister and I lived in Florida and moved around quite a lot. We moved from Florida to New York when I was 9 and I started playing cello in my elementary school orchestra along with my usual piano lessons. It wasn’t until my freshman year of High School that I realized I could sing. I entered my High School’s talent show and did my own rendition of “What You Know” by Two Door Cinema Club. Surprisingly to me it was my name they called when announcing the winner. If not for that affirmation that music was something I was truly capable of that can bring joy and inspiration to other people I know when I would have found my purpose.
After graduating High School I took a gap year before attending community college for a certification in Studio Recording Technology. It was the cheapest way I could be in an education based musical setting. I worked 2 jobs at the local mall while being a fulltime student. During my second semester I started interning at Savage Sounds Studios and eventually dropped out of college to pursue music full time. After a few months of working at the studio I started session singing on other artists’ music and eventually started songwriting with them. I was building my own clientele to work with and sharpen my skills. At one point I was asked to song-write in LA for developing artists at Atlantic Records (I don’t if I can even say that lol). Eventually I wanted to make the shift and become an Artist myself. I had tons of experience in studios as a vocalist, writer, arranger and I had my own stories to share.
In 2018 I started collaborating with a group of friends from college. We’d stay up and work on music for hours. That same year I was on Season 15 of The Voice, won an online singing contest and even got the opportunity to open up for Ella Mai and H.E.R at BestLyfe Fest in Wynwood, FL. In March of 2019 I debuted my first single under my previous artist name XIMONE and from there I started building my in-home studio, writing everyday and learned more about being an independent Artist. By the end of 2019 I was attending the Billboard Women In Music Awards and had multiple articles in Billboard written about me. I was in complete disbelief and never thought I could get to where I was. The 7 year old Alicia Keys didn’t know she was gonna do it all!
Fast forward three years later and I’m a full time Artist and Songwriter who founded a digital music magazine called Siren Magazine that highlights independent musicians. I’m also executive producing a collaborative EP with 9 other queer identifying Artists, Producers, Engineers and Musicians. All the while continuing to create my own music, build resources and give back to the Brooklyn underground music scene.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One of my biggest goals as a creative is to spread art and music to children in poverty as a progressive outlet. As a black queer woman I want to inspire all Black people, especially black women. We are undoubtedly the ‘lost’ demographic. We are overlooked and underappreciated, I believe that through music and art one can gain confidence and connection to spirit and people that will shine onto everyone else. By lifting the voices of Black women you lift the voices of everyone.
Building a Music + Arts Conservatory for black youth would be an absolute dream!!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I’d say the most rewarding thing is being able to ebb and flow through my days as I please. Of course there is always work to be done but having the say as to when and how those things are done is a blessing.
Rather than waking up at 8am and rushing to work before I’ve gotten all the crust out of my eyes, I’m able to naturally wake up earlier and give myself everything I need before working. On top of that, when I am ‘working’ I’m really creating. Making music, revising music, learning new techniques, nurturing professional relationships. It’s very similar to the corporate world just on my terms.
I used to battle with mental health daily and I was largely due to the pressures of capitalism and being made to work for things that weren’t working for me. Becoming a fulltime creative was a huge wakeup call for me!
