We were lucky to catch up with Lizz Kim recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lizz, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I worked on was probably DJing a visiting Japanese choirs dinner in LA. I loved finding and learning about the music that was popular in Japan at the time and hearing the 100-120 kids sing in perfect harmony at the end really reminded me of how I started singing and where I found the joy of singing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into Opera singing when I was a sophmore in high school. I was actually imitating my mother’s voice after consuming a lot of sugar on the 4th of July, and sang the national anthem operatically in the car on the way home from watching fireworks at the park. That was how my mother discovered that I had potential to learn and grow in the world of Opera. I was encouraged to audition for the school choir and take voice lessons to discover if I had a future in singing. I ended up auditioning and being placed into Junior Varsity Choir. After this, I went on to win multiple awards and scholarships in voice and placed 1st and, 1st place alternate in vocal competitions in California. I also ended up getting my degree in Vocal Performance at the Bob Cole Conservatory at CSULB.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn to grow in my journey, is to not let other peoples opinions dictate my future. I had discouraging teachers and peers who didn’t want to see me succeed and would tear apart my appearance and my “southern Californian” accent and would tell me that people wouldn’t take me seriously if I looked and sounded the way that I did. It was extremely discouraging and made me not find the joy in singing for quite a while, but over time I realized these are people who saw something in me that made them uncomfortable because it meant that they had to face their own failures and shortcomings. Never let anyone discourage you, and find good quality people to keep in your inner circle who are motivated and kind to remind you of who you are and what you’re trying to accomplish when you feel burnt out.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a performer is the feeling of being onstage and feeling the electricity from the crowd. Its unlike any other feeling i’ve ever felt. I loved DJing at Anime Expo and at nightclubs around LA and feeling the energy when I play uplifting high energy songs. Its really life giving.
