We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Liz Hahn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Liz below.
Hi Liz, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
We started in the bachelor party industry space 30 years ago supplying talent to bachelor party groups that were all local events in San Diego. Then we started seeing a trend where bachelor party groups wanted to do more than have a keg, a bartender and some friends over. They wanted brewery tours, bottle service, yacht parties and other planned activities in the area. The rise of Airbnbs and other vacation rentals in San Diego, we started seeing a trend of destination bachelor party. We were getting inquiries from our talent management side from all over the country to plan their bachelor party weekends. We started planning their parties from the moment they landing to the day they left. The top selling package was San Diego Brewery Tours. This became the inspiration to launch San Diego Bachelor Party.
Our goal is to cater to those groups of guys who are doing destination bachelor party and needed our help planning the activities and entertainment in a town. We became a local concierge business just for bachelor parties. No one else at the time was doing it. Most businesses did not want to work with bachelor party groups because historical they are rowdy group. However, we saw an opportunity as our customers were all college graduates and successful business folks flying in from all over the world. They want the best there is to do. Our 30 year experience in the industry combined with our relationships in San Diego made us a success. We know how to plan fun.
Liz, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
San Diego Bachelor Party services destination bachelor party groups coming to the sunny beaches of San Diego. We provide everything bachelor party including party buses, brewery tours, yacht charters in the San Diego Harbor, pontoon boats in Mission Bay, bottle services in Gaslamp District and general guidance to what to do in San Diego for fun. There is more than just sand and surf. We decided to focus in more on our entertainment offerings. We supply bikini bartenders, pool party girls, golf caddy girls, and fantasy poker dealers. We love having the local talent connect with fun bachelor party groups. It makes the trips more memorable.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The best way to fund a small business start up is to self-fund. In the begging this can be from your savings, your money from a side hustle or utilize credit to leverage yourself into business. It is very important to be mindful about how you invest your money in the business. Remember, this is an investment into your business. There are risks and rewards just like if you invested that same money into the stock marketing, 401K or a retirement account. Each business investment you want to analyze and understand the risks involved. You want to understand what you are investing in, what the goal is of that investment and ultimate how will this investment earn you cash flow. The goal is cash flow. Each burst of cash flow can get reinvested back into the business to earn more cash flow. Invest your money on things that will earn cash flow first.
When I started San Diego Bachelor Party the first item I invested in was the domain name, and the phone number. Then I went and rented a website design to get the company up and facing potential customers. I already know what the bachelor party industry needed. I presented my offering on the website. These were initial investments to start cash flow. When I grew the business to a certain point of success, I then hired a larger team to take over the web designs and marketing. My goal was to stay in the visionary phase and create unique packages and offerings for my customers to continue building on our success.
Can you talk to us about your experience with buying businesses?
Yes. I bought my first business in 1991. It was a small entertainment company in San Diego, CA. We were in negotiations and the owner at the time had 3 others making offers. I just started college and needed the company to earn money to pay for college. I ran to the bank, got cash and drove to the owners house. I handed them a pile of cash and bought them out. I came home with a pager, a list of phone numbers and Kinko copy photos of entertainers in a portfolio. It was very rudimentary at the time. I took that concepts and grew it into a million dollar business. Along the way, I bought the competitors who were aligned with my vision and were ready to sell. My goal was to take over their company websites, phone lines and customer lists, work the leads to create more cash flow. I took that cash flow to reinvest into my bigger vision.
