We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Liz (Aylissa) Suarez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Liz (Aylissa) below.
Alright, Liz (Aylissa) thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
The Hair industry is a very “I” affiliated industry. I remember coming on the team and feeling so intimidated by the girls already on the floor. The problem wasn’t my confidence I knew I just had this weird way of understanding everything it was more the vibe I would get off them. They wanted to help you grow but if you didn’t use their way it was an issue, I hated that. Fast forward to now and as Manager and currently appointed educator of Bonjour Belle Magnolia I make it a point to make sure everyone feels equal and heard. Any one can agree that when you walk in to Magnolia you don’t feel like your at your typical salon, you at ease in a very relaxed environment with a team that truly gets along and has respect for each other. Having such a positive work environment has literally allowed everyone from our oldest stylist to our brand new stylist to have confidence and display beautiful work on every client who sits in their chair. The fact that I have a role in creating this environment and growth of others makes me beyond proud.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Aylissa Suarez but I go by Liz. I was in the medical field for 10yr Years before deciding to switch careers. I started off with just makeup and went to cosmetology school. I’m going to be 31 at the end of May and have 3 beautiful children. I now have been a stylist at Bonjour Belle Salon in Magnolia, My position is manager and more recently Educator. I am still an active stylist only have 3 years in the industry I know I am beyond blessed to hold the titles I have, but I was brought to this for a reason. I make sure to keep myself as updated as possible so all the stylist we have stay current. I want our girls to be confident in anything and everything that sits in their chair. I am beyond honor in the owners of Bonjour Belle putting trust in what they have allowed me to build. I never would have seen myself in this industry 10 years ago. Although now I love my job and have shown my kids no matter your age you can focus stay determined and grow, all while staying humble and grateful for your blessings. I can see such a huge growth in the future for the salon and myself. I was in the right place at the right time and found my salon home from the get go now I get to help mold the future and I take so much pride in that. All my hard work from my medical customer service experience to my knowledge of a hair has allowed me to just go and it’s a dream come true.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
First off ignore anything that even smells like drama. When anything arises address it directly and squash it move on. Respect all your staff the way you want to be respected. Continue to act as part of the team if there are closing duties join in on them. Listen to your team when they come to you. If you speak to them and make a plan of action follow through. But most important respect!!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is a new job description I added to my resume, but seriously it takes so much effort. I do not edit any of my pictures. Since I am a hairstylist and altering to my pictures will adjust the color I prefer the true color be shown so my clients finding me on social media have real expectations. I also have the Salon information pinned so if anyone is interested in booking they will get directed to the website and can book online. Along with a few after I post the before. I end the post with tagging the salon and hash tagging the area and service I did for that day. Any time I go to a educational class I network and trade handles this is huge in my numbers raising.
