Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lisa Jacovsky. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lisa, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Working with Brainstorm Productions on my most recent book. They are an amazing organization that employs individuals with autism. Each illustration in Rascal Cat brothers is a different style due to being done by a different individual with autism. The cover is as well and the company put together the book into the layout. It shows that with a chance and Guidance individuals with autism can do anything. They are amazing and talented individuals that prove autism is not limiting
Lisa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am currently a children’s book author with over 9 years experience working in the field of applied behavior analyst. I started in this field when i was at the end of my first masters degree. During my career i was able to first work with adults living in residential group homes and asked to plan activities for them. These activities allowed me to go with the individuals and their staff to places like Dorney Park or the Crayola factory. This was a great experience that allowed me to discuss later with other families of children the things their own child can do later on. In addition, it influenced my desire to make each book that i wrote in my first series, Lets talk! a different activity. It has helped show families that their child can do it too. The goal of my books is to show families that even though their child may have autism or not be verbal they can communicate in a different way and have the same experiences as other children. I also offer childrens coloring books, mentoring, training for families, teachers and administration, and book marks. I am incredibly proud of my books and the impact they are making. in addition, i am also incredibly proud of the changes i have made for families of individuals with autism. helping these families to see the positives of receiving the diagnosis.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think what has helped me build the most is just networking. I am active on social media and have joined many different facebook groups. Facebook has been a huge help in learning to market and make relationships. i also have taken every suggestion of who to contact from other authors i have met or suggestions made on facebook groups. i am not always comfortable contacting others that i dont know out of the blue but it has been a huge success. It has led me to make get to know and make a great relationship with so many other authors as well as Brainstorm Productions. i also have made great relationships with principals at schools by asking to do school readings. It has led me to my new business called Spectrum Insights where i provide trainings on various topics in the field of ABA. It also led me to begin my podcast No Limits with Lisa Jacovsky which is now award winning. Also, through my podcast, i have gotten to make my little girl dream comes true by interviewing Chris Loggins from Fred Rogers Productions and Rick Suvalle and Craig Carlisle, two writers from Thomas the tank Engine All engines go! Both i have been a fan of since i was a little girl. being able to make a difference and make my dreams come true just by networking and randomly reaching out has helped build my reputation and career.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
It takes alot of effort and research and patience to be able to continue to promote your books. There have definitely been emails from organizations that said to no coming on my podcast. There have been organizations and schools that have not even responded to my emails for free readings or a free interview. But even through that i continues to email and continue to try. it is those few yes responses that fuel me to keep going. Those few families that write reviews or tell me in person how much my books mean to them and how it changed their views of a loved one. Through those months where not one book sells i remind myself of those positive things that my books have done to continue pushing forward. That is the reason i continue to do this. even one family learning and having a better view of autism makes my work a success.
