We were lucky to catch up with Lindsay Rapier recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay , thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
A lot of things go into success. You have to be driven, work hard, continue to want to learn more, take mistakes as learning opportunities, communicate well with others, the list goes on. What I think makes lasting success though is the passion behind it. If it’s what you love to do, and it comes naturally to you, then it doesn’t feel like work. When I am photographing people I get a huge boost of energy, I truly enjoy it, and a lot of times its hard to stop! I actually have to set a timer during shoots because a 30 minute session can easily turn intro hours if I don’t! So if you absolutely love what you do, I believe success will always follow.
Lindsay , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! I’m Lindsay Rapier. I am a natural light photographer based out of Dallas. I photograph families, newborns, seniors, engagements, and one of my favorite things to photograph…weddings!
I got into photography in 2017. I started with photographing my daughter, and then my sister’s family. Those were posted on social media and it quickly just become referral, off of referral, off of referral.
What sets me apart? Well my absolute favorite photos are one that have that perfect golden hour glow and ones that look candid and very in the moment. I’ll always get a few “everyone look at the camera and smile” but when I can get all the genuine smiles, real giggles, playfulness, and emotion; those are always the most magical. I also know that does not come naturally to people. Ive been on the other side of the camera and its intimidating! So I know the importance of making people feel comfortable in the front of the camera, building up their confidence, giving prompts and seeing what they naturally do but also still slightly coaching them at the same time. I want all my clients walking away with killer photos that they will love and cherish!
What types of problems do I solve for my clients? Well, small children are typically the most unpredictable! I am also a first grade teacher so I LOVE kids! Their wildness and playfulness is actually amazing. I can sometimes see the parents dying with embarrassment inside but I always tell them don’t worry about it AT ALL. This is what makes the best photos, trust me! Let them laugh, play and be kids so I capture their real personalities and big happy smiles.
What am I most proud of? I would have to say getting into the wedding world. I’ve ALWAYS wanted to photograph weddings, now I am here, and I absolutely love it! I just adore all my brides, capturing their love story, and I get to photograph their most important day from start to finish?! It’s just a dream! Ive also had the opportunity to do designation weddings and now I’m even more hooked! Bring on the brides!..
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I have grown all my clients off of referrals and social media. That’s exactly how I started in my photography journey and its been an increasing steady flow since. I love all my clients, so I know if Im photographing their friends or other family members they will be just as fabulous! If they aren’t verbally telling others, social media will speak itself. I try to encourage my families and brides to tag me in their posts so I’m just one click away for new client!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects for me is when my clients actually cry tears of joy when they see their photos. Every time I deliver a gallery I’m eagerly waiting to hear back from them, do they love them, are they happy, just all the things. Then when I hear clients tell me they are literally crying because they’re so good…thats just the biggest compliment ever! It gives me a huge boost of confidence and is so rewarding knowing I helped make someone feel something so positive through my images.
