We recently connected with Lindsay Kreighbaum and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think success means something different to everyone, and it doesn’t always mean financially. To me, success means that I am happy WHILE being able to support myself – not because I am able to support myself. To be successful means that I am feeling fulfilled in the things I am doing every day.
It takes a lot of discipline to be successful. Successful people work hard and fail over and over again before they start to learn what they need to do to actually feel success. Discipline, hard work, and not letting failure deter you from your goals are crucial to becoming successful.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Lindsay, I’m a commercial food, product, and stop motion photographer based in Los Angeles. My style is playful, bold, and full of color and intentional detail. My favorite clients to work for are plant-based and sustainable brands that give something back to others or the planet. I love including playful details in each image I create while helping my clients problem solve and stand apart from their competition.
I have been a photographer for a long time, but in different avenues. I photographed portraits, weddings, etc. for a long time before dabbling in any still life/food work. I worked in restaurants for over 10 years, and I asked my boss at the time if he needed more photos of our food. He took a chance on me, and i just grew from there! Weddings never felt right to me – I didn’t feel the passion or creativity that I wanted so much. Being able to create a beautiful image with a team of stylists & a crew for major brands is something that is still so amazing to me. I wouldn’t want any other job!
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish there was more transparency in the commercial photography industry. There are not many resources or standards as far as pricing, and what to charge for, which causes problems for everyone involved. I have had to learn a lot along the way – from others, from trial and error, etc. and I wish I didn’t have to go through all those speed bumps and guesswork for so long before I felt confident enough to charge appropriate rates for the client’s ask.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Covid forced me to pivot my business entirely. With most of my clients being restaurants or local small businesses – there was no need for my services when my clients were just trying to survive. Without work, I took the spare time that the pandemic gave me and I reshot my entire portfolio to target larger brands that would allow me to work remotely.
Once I knew who my ideal clients were, it all started happening really fast. Things were starting to open up again, and the right clients were starting to find my work and hire me. The rest is history!
