We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lindsay Jordan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lindsay below.
Lindsay, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I became an LPN in 2016, and a registered nurse in 2018. I absolutely loved my career in the acute care field. I worked in progressive care then transitioned to critical care, my dream specialty, until Covid hit. The exhaustion, the mandated extra shifts, and the “take care of everyone but yourself” culture grew to be too much during Covid. I tried other nursing jobs in long term care, and things only got worse. I began selling on Poshmark in 2015. This last year, I began using it as a second means for income, trying to trans
ition out of the nursing field. In order for me to have access to the type of clothing I wanted to provide to my customers, I was told I would have to develop a website, and start a company. So that’s exactly what I did. Growing up in a small town, there was always this stigma about maintaining the status quo of the community. You’re taught to be quiet so that others stay comfortable, this includes clothing attire for all occasions. Wear minimal, “don’t draw attention to yourself”. But this didn’t work for me. I have always loved alternative style, streetwear, gothic culture, and evolving fashion. These are all things that are few and far between in rural culture. So I decided to make it available for everyone around me, and those who can relate throughout the nation. I’ve spent my entire life trying to appease everyone around me, but I decided it was time to appease myself, and all of the others out there that are just like me. That was how Linny J’s Closet was developed. Where you are encouraged to be YOU, no matter form, shape, or style that might come in. Because after all you only live once, so you might as well live for yourself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Linny J’s Closet is all about being you. I wanted to specialize in being different. Most of the clothing and items we sell aren’t typical of a brick and mortar football mom boutique. Linny J’s Closet offers a variety of women’s formal wear (prom, gala, homecoming, cocktail dresses), streetwear that includes a Y2K collection, a goth/alternative inspired ‘Dark Paradise’ collection. loungewear, and of course, our ‘attention seeker’ collection that includes everything that is bright, glam, and sparkly. One thing Linny J’s Closet is known for is the scrunchie zipper pouches made by yours truly. I sew three different sizes, with the largest size being able to accommodate even sunglasses and bank cards into the scrunchie. There’s nothing better than your favorite hair accessory with a pocket inside. They are available in over 25 different colors and textures. If requested, I am always willing to make a custom size if the three I offer don’t fit what the customer is looking for. I carry plus size options in many clothing items, and we actually just contracted with Sydney’s Closet; a plus size ONLY formal wear company that is unlike any other formal company in the Midwest. We will be carrying sizes between 14-32 in many of their dresses, because glam should come in ALL shapes and sizes, not just petite. Linny J’s closet also carries footwear of all styles. One service I plan to start offering is personal shopping and styling. If a customer has an idea of something they want and can’t find it, all they have to do is send a request in, and I will search until I find what they’re looking for. Because who has time to scour the internet for hours looking for a specific dress or style that isn’t available most places? I am proud of the diversity of clothing we offer, and even more proud that this coming formal season I will be able to provide the big girl population with the same glam looks that petite girls have had access to their entire lives.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Photographing myself in the clothing I sell! Personal ties seem to resonate more with not only members of our community, but others on social media, compared to just advertising the clothing on the models. I photograph myself wearing all my products, because I don’t sell anything that I personally wouldn’t wear.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Advertise. Advertise Advertise Advertise. You will reach thousands of people that would have never come across your business had you not. Make a budget for monthly advertising. I hired the BEST web developer and marketer, Emily Geisler of EMG LTD. She has been a key part in building a social media audience, and developing a marketing and advertising plan. I strongly suggest hiring someone who knows what they’re doing, it’s well worth the investment!
