We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lily Monge a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lily , appreciate you joining us today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
My hero is my dad. He came to the U.S. when he was only 16 years old — it blows my mind that he was just a teen when he realized he needed to move out here for a better life. Since I can remember he has always provided us with what we needed and more. His work ethic is like no one else’s. He came to the states hardly knowing anyone and with nothing but his clothes on his back, regardless of this he never gave up on building the life that he always dreamed of. His story is a constant reminder to me that I can do anything I set my mind to, I’m the director of my life. From him I have learned what hard work is, what determination is and that anything is possible regardless of the cards that we were dealt.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Lily and I am a Latina-owned business who specializes in eyebrows. I do everything brows which includes waxing, henna stain, lamination and microblading. My journey in this industry started two years ago when I was given the opportunity to apprentice a very well known brow artist in LA. It was truly the best blessing of my life. This year was my year to spread my wings and venture out on my own. It has been the scariest but best risk I have taken thus far.
Throughout the process I’ve changed and grown so much but one thing that has remained constant is the love and passion I have for my career. I love making people feel beautiful, I love giving people a safe space to relax or vent, I love meeting new people and learning new perspectives.
It’s not just a brow appointment, it’s so much more than that. My clients fill up my cup and in return I fill theirs. Life is about energy and when you have that good energy flowing everything feels just right.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
As of right now I keep communication with my clients through social media. Social media is where I post any promotions going on, I post my availability, any upcoming changes, etc. I also keep my clients in the loop of what’s going on when I see them in person. My loyal / regular clients are the first to know of anything going on. I recently implemented a loyalty program as a thank you to my clients. Overall, to grow that brand loyalty my best advice is to personalize each visit with your client. Create a bond with them by giving them a safe space for them to be themselves. That alone will help with staying in touch and keeping that loyalty.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve had to unlearn to play it safe. I’ve always been the type to have a plan and follow it step by step but that’s not how entrepreneurial life works. Life in general is about taking risks. There is no right time to start a business and there is definitely not just one way of doing things. If one plan fails then you have to quickly jump to another one and that’s pretty much the rollercoaster you’ll be on when choosing this lifestyle — fun! I remember always saying, “it’s not the right time”, “I don’t have this and this together yet”, “I’m waiting on this to start it” and I mean the list of excuses went on and on. I then realized I cannot wait for all these things to come together. I just needed to start right then and there. It was scary and such a change of character for me but I look back and see how “playing it safe” would have never gotten me to where I am now.
