We recently connected with Levitate and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Levitate thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I was born and raised in Mexico City and my musical journey started when I was five years old when I started doing my mix tapes and improvised radio show recordings of myself talking about anything I could think of at the time. Around that same time, I learned how to play the piano, and a couple of years later, I learned how to play the drums. After that, I was also classically trained at the Mexican National Conservatory of Music, located in the Polanco district of Mexico City. When I was 12 years old, I joined one of my friend’s garage band as a drummer and I also filled out as a drummer for my cousin’s rock band every once in a while. The way that I got more into the technical stuff of music was when I started helping out as a sound engineer on some of the gigs and that’s when I learned more about the technology side of music. I think that my background and upbringing has had a big impact on who I am today because I come from a different country with a different perspective on things. This influences me as a person and as a musician because I have a fresh and different point of view that helps me bring out the best of both worlds. I apply this perspective and view a lot when I make music as I’m always up to date on music trends worldwide and I try to incorporate that into music and everyday life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Better known in the EDM scene as Levitate, I produce electronic music that blends trance with tech infused beats, by combining the best elements of electronic music. I got started in music since I started playing the piano and the drums when I was about 7 years old. I took those skills and became a Trance music producer when I got to college when I started to make my own songs and remixes to play on my own DJ gigs. Nowadays, my music gets played by all of the big DJ’s in the trance music scene such as Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Above & Beyond, Cosmic Gate, Andrew Rayel, etc., and my music can also be heard on the biggest EDM radio shows worldwide such as A State Of Trance, Group Therapy, Wake Your Mind, Resonation Radio, Find Your Harmony, etc.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I want to start off by saying that the music business is the most challenging business in the world. Getting the skills to become a music producer is a hard journey on itself, and getting to find your own style is another hard internal journey also. As Levitate, I produce progressive trance music, so the struggles for every musical style out there might be different depending on the artist/producer. I think that my biggest struggle throughout my musical journey has been to be able to combine the musical background with the technology side of things and be able to truly become a music producer the does every single facet of the music production process. As an example, for every pop/hip-hop artist, there are around 20-30 music producers behind the scenes trying to make a single song. For electronic music, most of us are lone rangers doing the work of those 20-30 people when we make our music. That right there should say something about the struggle of being a one man show for your own music productions!
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best way to support artists is to go out there and support them on their gigs/shows! If they’re musicians like myself, go to the live gigs and buy/stream the music that we put out there online. It is important to support any way possible, even if it’s just with words of encouragement as we do really appreciate the love and support that we get, especially from our family and friends! All of your support keeps us going and gets us inspired to continue to put out great music every single time!
