One of the most impactful lessons I learned in school came from a seventh-grade project where I had to research prices for soap-making supplies. I was struggling to compare prices until my teacher realized my difficulty stemmed from not knowing how to make phone calls. She sat down with me, helped me write a script, and taught me phone etiquette. This lesson in communication was invaluable and came full circle years later when I had to teach an employee how to handle customer calls.
One morning, I asked my employee, Jake, to call a customer and confirm details for a moving job. Jake made the call but quickly got flustered when the customer gave him additional information, and he didn’t know how to handle it because it was off script. I guided him through it, reminding him to always take notes and stay adaptable.
This experience underscored the importance of effective communication and adaptability, which have been crucial in my business. Whether it’s coordinating a move or ensuring customer satisfaction, these skills have helped me provide a smoother, more reliable service. Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
This story exemplifies resilience and marks a pivotal moment for Levi’s Movers. One morning, I arrived at a job site to find our head crew lead, let’s call him Jim, looking pale and pacing the sidewalk. When I asked what was wrong, he pointed to the truck. I saw a large hole in the roof. I grabbed a granola bar and a bottle of water, and approached him. “Take a deep breath, Jim,” I said. “It’s going to be okay. This is why we have insurance. Here, drink some water and sit down.”
We managed to rent another truck and get through the day, fulfilling our promise to handle moves with a smile, no matter the circumstances. However, the following day, two movers didn’t show up for work. To make matters worse, someone claimed we had hit their car, and we received a notice in the mail about a lawsuit. It was time for me to take my own deep breath. As a new company with only one truck, I didn’t know how we were going to make it through this crisis. Losing 50% of our employees overnight and facing a lawsuit, I feared it might be the end.
But it’s in moments like these that we discover our true resilience and commitment to our values. I didn’t know how we were going to cover the moves or get a new truck, but I felt a shift inside me. I was determined to figure it out. I rallied our remaining team, and reinforced our core values of honesty, integrity, and communication. We were transparent with our clients about the situation and assured them we would still meet their needs.
Despite being a moving company temporarily without movers or trucks, we pushed forward. I leveraged my close ties with the community and industry contacts to find temporary help and equipment. Our dedication to our core values helped us through the tough times. The transparency and integrity with which we handled the situation strengthened our relationships with clients and our reputation.
