We recently connected with Leia Lockheart and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Leia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
My first celebrity job was a good story. So, it’s post-2008-Recession, in a new career as a Massage Therapist living in Hollywood. As soon as I received my massage license, I contacted all of my band friends and asked, “How do I become a Massage Therapist on a band tour?” The roadie, Sasha Resetnikov, with my high school mates’ band, Pepper, responded. Sasha said, “When we are on tour, we always use this agency.” I didn’t know there was an agency for massage, let alone for rockstars. I made a naive mistake by calling up the phone number on their website. The queen bee herself for which the agency is named, answered the phone. She was so annoyed I called. “We have a process and calling out of the blue is not it.” She complained whilst taking gig calls and put me on hold. An hour later, she offered an “audition”.
Soon after, I had a hands-on, one hour deep tissue massage on a local 10 year veteran massage therapist. I hadn’t even taken the deep tissue course yet! I asked a fellow massage student to teach me a knockout session.
I’m pretty nervous at the audition. After the massage session, the veteran asks me, “How long have you been massaging?” From the beginning of school until that point, I tentatively answer, “7 months.” She was surprised, then followed with, “I can really feel your passion.” I got the job!

Leia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
What makes Leia different? Leia seeks the cause of the pain and discomfort. Is it physical, mental, emotional, spiritual? What does stress mean to you? Next, with her keen anatomy knowledge, will pinpoint where the pain originates and why. Then, a change in the body will occur. It doesn’t end there. Leia will give you tips and tricks to allow you to self care from home.
Leia excels at relieving chronic pain originating from headaches, lower back, the jaw (TMJ), and the “computer back”. She is relentless with knots. She is also known to deliver transcendent massages that are out of this realm.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The Pandemic Lockdown of 2020, was the best thing to ever happen to me. I left my home in Big Bear Lake, California and moved onto a friend’s couch. 11 months later, still out of a job. I was offered another couch from another friend. She turned out to be an abusive alcoholic. She kicked me out with snow on the ground, with my three pups in tow, with no place to go. I got Air BnB’s for a week. By the end of the week, I had a job at a busy spa in Costa Mesa, California and moved into a luxury apartment complex.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
1. Be early. 2. Talk to your clients and listen to what they’re not telling you, too.
3. Always take the gig.-When other massage therapist say “no”, you say, “yes”.
4. Ask questions to fellow massage therapists.-Ask the difficult questions. We are always happy to share knowledge.
5. Stop moving to a different city.-Pick a city and stay there. Your massage practice will be larger with word of mouth.
