Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lefteris Ioannou. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lefteris, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Every project I undertake holds profound meaning to me, and I approach each endeavor with enthusiasm and passion. For me, it’s not merely about accepting any project that comes my way; it’s about establishing a deep connection with the work and being driven by a genuine desire to contribute. Meaningfulness lies in the authentic connection to the creative process and the people involved.
One of the most recent projects I’ve had the privilege to be part of was the LatinX Photography Project, a documentary directed by Alejandro Palacios, currently airing on PBS. This project carried a significance due to the collaborative spirit that thrived between Alejandro and myself. It was a project that was under development for years until Alejandro decided it was time to breathe life into it, and he reached out to me. Remarkably, we had no prior acquaintance; Alejandro stumbled upon my work online, discovered a resonance, and contacted me out of the blue.
Prior to our collaboration, Alejandro harbored a vision of using only virtual instruments for the score. However, after hearing the duduk recorded and performed by a wonderful wind player Apostolis Mallias, featured on the piece “Sharing Yourself”, as well as me steering him towards that direction, Alejandro decided to record the whole score for the documentary.
This made me very happy as it was my vision for the documentary from the beginning and in parallel, recording the score with musicians vs’ to keeping it with virtual musicians transformed the potency of the music.
In essence, my commitment to meaningful projects revolves around the depth of collaboration, where the collective effort becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a composer and musician, my life journey has been a tapestry woven across continents, reflecting a rich blend of cultural influences. Born in New York and raised in Athens, Greece, I was immersed in the dual worlds of American and European music cultures from an early age. Music, especially rock music, became an integral part of my upbringing, igniting a lifelong passion.
My formal music education led me to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where I honed my skills in Guitar Performance. This foundation allowed me to become a versatile musician, enabling me to collaborate with renowned Greek pop artists as a guitarist and session musician. Through these collaborations, I also delved into composition and production, forging connections with record labels. This experience paved the way for my journey as a recording artist, resulting in the release of three personal records under labels like SONY-BMG and IMPACT MUSIC, as well as a cinematic album for a theater soundtrack under UNIVERSAL-EMI. It was during this phase that I discovered my profound passion for storytelling music, marking a significant turning point in my career.
In September 2017, a daring thought took root in my mind—an aspiration I might not have pursued in earlier years. I made the life-altering decision to leave Greece, embracing change and venturing beyond my comfort zone. My goal was to further expand my knowledge in music by studying Film Scoring. With unwavering determination, I applied to Berklee College of Music in Valencia, Spain, and received acceptance with a scholarship, a recognition of my past achievements. This pivotal decision ultimately led me to Los Angeles, where I continue to follow my musical path as a composer and orchestrator, specializing in crafting storytelling music for visual media. My approach is characterized by adaptability, whether it’s creating orchestral, electronic, hybrid, and/or blues rock to pop compositions, always aligned with the unique demands of each project.
I pride myself on being a music problem solver, effectively communicating with clients, collaborators, and directors to curate the musical palette that supports and hopefully enhances and elevates the project’s vision. My commitment to flexibility, deep understanding of a director’s vision, and dedication to contributing to and enriching their artistic goals defines my approach to music composition and orchestration.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My creative journey is guided by a deep mission: to craft music that springs from the depths of my heart and resonates profoundly with people, connecting on an emotional level that transcends words. I aspire to evoke a rich tapestry of emotions through my compositions. My goal is for my music to serve as a vessel, allowing listeners to explore and connect with their own feelings and experiences, ultimately helping them feel more alive. Writing music is not something I consider work, it’s an intrinsic part of who I am, as natural as breathing. This authenticity and passion infuses every note I write. Each piece is more than mere melodies. Apart from supporting the visual narrative I am humbled every time I receive feedback that my music painted vivid, emotional landscapes, igniting curiosity and inspired listeners to delve deeper into the stories and inspirations. In essence, my creative journey aims to support the given project I am working on and to touch the hearts and minds of others, fostering emotional connections and weaving intricate stories through the art of sound.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A significant lesson I’ve had to unlearn in my life is the unquestioning acceptance of belief systems that I inherited from various sources, including education, institutions, and even family. From a young age, among positive attributes I also absorbed teachings from the schooling system, society, as well as well-intentioned advice from my parents and relatives. I believed these ideas were real, valid, and helpful, assuming they were guiding lights for my journey. However, I eventually came to realize that many of these belief systems were like imposing shadows cast from the past, inhibiting my personal growth. It was a gradual process of shedding these inherited convictions, unlearning the teachings that did not serve my individual growth, and allowing myself to break free from the constraints they imposed. This unlearning journey has been essential in helping me discover my true self and honor the untapped potential within me, enabling me to grow without unnecessary restrictions.
The backstory to this unlearning process involves moments of reflection, self-discovery, and a growing awareness of the need for personal authenticity.
