We recently connected with Lea Nehme and have shared our conversation below.
Lea, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Please tell us about starting your own firm and if you’d do anything different knowing what you know now.
I started thinking about starting my own firm about 6 years ago, as I wanted to be able to provide a high level of service to clients. My family and I had gone through the immigration process ourselves, and I remember how difficult it was for all of us. I wanted to be able to help others in a similar position, and make sure clients felt taken care of throughout the process and had all their questions answered. I had done my fair share of work with immigration clinics during my time at Berkeley and had worked with organizations like the ACLU and Tahirih Justice Center, but when I went to bigger firms, I realized I would rather be an entrepreneur and work on cases where I felt I could make the most difference. I was lucky enough to meet another sole proprietor with the same outlook, Ashkan Emami, and we decided to join forces. It’s been an incredibly fulfilling journey, and we are so grateful to be able to do the work that we do.

Lea, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are an immigration law firm that focuses on creatives, entrepreneurs, and others with extraordinary ability. What sets us apart is our dedication to excellence, and our accessibility to our clients. My partner and I are available 24 hours a day to answer client questions, and most clients have our personal cell phone numbers. We help with a variety of visas and green card applications, including O-1, E-2, EB-1, NIW, and many others.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I had started my own firm and was trying to get it off the ground. I was doing contract work for some other attorneys at the time to make ends meet. A former colleague introduced me to my now-business partner, Ashkan, and we decided that I would do some contract work for him. We quickly figured out that we had very similar goals and were driven by the same ideals. We decided to team up pretty quickly after meeting and we haven’t looked back!

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
We do get a fair share of clients from our marketing efforts, but the best source of new clients is word of mouth. Happy clients are our best source for referrals, and we are always thrilled when someone comes to us as a referral from. an existing client.
