Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lea Cybelle. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lea, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned the art of pattern making and design from couturier and fashion designer, Colleen Quen. In addition to learning from Quen, I hold a master’s degree in Fashion Communication from the American University of Paris and I’ve recently become certified in Technical Design.
Pattern-making is the most essential skill that contributes to my current success as an emerging designer. My overall understanding and ability to draft mathematically based fashion patterns for the human body, turn paper patterns into three-dimensional designs, and sew them is real-life alchemy. I take pride in creating from a space of vulnerability and sustainability.
Plenty of obstacles appear and will continue to appear, creating space for elevation. Like many creatives, I am a multi-hyphenate, and I’ve come face to face with one-track-minds in different forms who’ve tried to box me in. I enjoy using this as an opportunity to further expand the mind of individuals.

Lea, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society can stop celebrity worship and looking like different versions of one another. Give actual artists their flowers and money for their energy/creation. Stop supporting every trend and think for yourself to find out who you truly align with vice versa.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In the very beginning of my pattern-making journey with my teacher, Colleen Quen, she required all calculations and drafting to be done by hand. I didn’t realize at the time she was better preparing me as a creative and as an artist but I was not/still am not the best at math and I had to strengthen my basic math skills to learn the craft. When it came to calculations for couture patterns, the calculations had to be exact or it would reflect in the garment and there was no calculator allowed so I was sometimes impatient with myself. However, I pushed through and I’m thankful to her that I learned pattern-making the original way and not some watered down version of it.
