We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lazaro Tenreiro. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lazaro below.
Lazaro, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Opening Lazaro’s was not an easy task and there were a lot of things I didn’t know about the food industry but I took a risk and it paid off. Here I am 14 years later

Lazaro, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I used to take my jewelry clients home with me and cook and entertain for them. I realized that there wasn’t any real Cuban restaurants in Atlanta. My clients loved my food and so does my family so I took a chance and opened my own. Growing up I spent a lot of time in the kitchen with my paternal grandmother while the other kids in the family went to play. I learned a lot and most of the family recipes. Now the want the recipes and I don’t give it to them.. lol

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Yes, at the beginning of my business there were a lot of set backs. Hiring employees was a big challenge especially in the food industry. I tried to make them feel like family but it backfired and they walked all over me. I wanted to hire people that treated you like family when you walked in and most of the staff was not familiar with that. It took a long time to make them realize my vision but I was able to do it.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What I think helped me build my reputation in this business was that I never changed the way I selected my products. I go shopping every week and select the best products I can find. I hand select most of my produce and meats. I knew that my kids and family were going to eat at my restaurant so I needed to feed them really good and quality food.
