We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauren Mullinax a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I am working towards creating a new healing genre of music. I am healing from mental health issues and through my song writing I’ve ended up not helping myself but others who feel exactly like I do. I am a human trafficking survivor and recovering from the things I was put through feels almost impossible at times but I feel like I’m here to encourage others through their own healing and music facilitates that. I’ve seen music do some powerful things and I just love sharing that.

Lauren, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a 4th grader going into 5th grade I heard the Jaws theme played on cello and I was instantly in love. My parents didn’t even know what a cello was and we bought a cheap one on early days of ebay and it came in what looked like a casket box and it came broken. I started late with the school orchestra and felt so left out and I was always last chair cellist (meaning I sucked.) I just kept going with it and here I am now challenging myself to sing and play a lightup cello and accomplishing so many incredible things. I’m releasing my pent up energy into songs of healing.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The end goal is to make the world a better place. Through my passion of music. I believe in the healing properties of music. I’ve seen Alzheimer’s patients come alive again from hearing a familiar song. I’ve seen a man having a heart attack completely calm down with my music. I’ve seen a mute woman speak and a woman who never sleeps find rest in the solace of my songs and trust me the nurses went running around crazy. So I do it for the world to find peace and love.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Goodness, there are so many set backs in my life. But I learned that sometimes our set backs are our set ups for something great. Me surviving trafficking is a big showcase of my resilience. Not just the fact of a preditor praying on me as a 14 year old girl. But the everlasting struggle of mental health issues. My case is a very challenging one and it’s taken me a lot of doctors and providers to help me cope through life’s curve balls. It felt like I grew up with a false identity, I had believed the lies that not only did other people tell me but what I believed for myself. I’m learning and unlearning. I just want to say in order to heal, there’s going to be some pain that lasts a while after the wound begins to heal. I can’t believe I’m alive and sometimes I feel like I can’t keep going but I choose to fight the good fight day in and day out. I’m learning to love life and working on changing my perception. I’m not what happened to me but through those experiences it has really revealed what’s truly inside me, which is love. I am resilient as I continue to walk this right path.
