We recently connected with Lauren Isaacson and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
The first client I had was actually another staff member at my previous school who had a student with unique needs and wanted help in the advocacy sphere of our new business. This staff member knew that I had the student’s best interests at heart and wanted to truly help the family figure out how their child was going to make it through school. Over several weeks and meetings, their child was able to be evaluated for and receive services for special education within a matter of a few months. I remember after it all was figured out, the parent asked to go to dinner as an extra thank you for setting their child up for success. I would say that was the moment when I knew I was doing exactly what I was supposed to. That is really what started it all! That is the entire reason my side-hustle tutoring business transformed into an educational consultant business, designed specifically to empower students, support families, and advocate for success.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The Tutoring Hub: Tutoring & Advocacy – Where Learning Meets Advocacy The Tutoring Hub: Tutoring & Advocacy started with a simple belief: every student deserves the support to thrive, and every parent deserves the tools to advocate for their child. We provide personalized tutoring in reading, math, and writing—from preschool to adulthood—and guide families through the often-complex world of special education, including IEPs and 504 plans.
My journey to become an entrepreneur began in 2016, teaching abroad with a nonprofit in Southeast Asia. That experience sparked a lifelong passion for education, leading to two Master’s degrees in Education and years teaching special education in both U.S. and international schools. Returning to my hometown of Baltimore in 2023, I saw firsthand how challenging it could be for families to navigate the public school system. In January 2024, I dreamed up a business that would combine tutoring with advocacy, empowering students and parents alike. By spring, The Tutoring Hub: Tutoring & Advocacy was born.
Our mission is to empower students, support families, and advocate for success. In our first year, we celebrated the graduation of three students and helped countless families gain clarity, confidence, and success within the school system. Every session, consultation, and strategy is rooted in the belief that education works best when students and families are supported together.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
While social media, advertising, and vendor fairs all have their place, I’ve found that the most effective way new clients find The Tutoring Hub: Tutoring & Advocacy is through word of mouth. There’s something uniquely powerful about a parent recommending your services to another parent—especially when it comes to their children’s education. These referrals are built on trust, shared experiences, and the confidence that comes from seeing real results.
For many families, deciding to seek tutoring or advocacy support can feel overwhelming. They want to know that someone will understand their child’s needs, guide them through complex school systems, and deliver tangible academic growth. Hearing a firsthand account from another parent who has walked that path is more than just reassurance—it’s a lifeline.
Every referral tells a story. It reflects the dedication, care, and personalized approach that we bring to every student and family. It’s also a reminder that in education, relationships matter as much as results. The fact that most of our new clients come through these personal recommendations is both humbling and motivating—it shows that the work we do doesn’t just impact students academically; it builds lasting trust and community. That is why we have a huge referral program built directly into our services, just to say thank you!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When I first started The Tutoring Hub: Tutoring & Advocacy, I had no expectation of becoming a social media expert. I just wanted to share helpful tips for students and parents, highlight success stories, and create a fun, light-hearted space where families could feel supported. Slowly, over time, our social media presence began to grow—not through flashy campaigns or viral posts, but through consistency, authenticity, and engagement.
We started with small, thoughtful posts—tips for helping children with reading, updates on advocacy, and encouragement for parents navigating school systems. As our community grew, we expanded to multiple platforms, including YouTube, where we share more in-depth tutorials and insights. The growth is slow and steady, but meaningful, and it eventually reached a point where we needed to bring on extra hands to help manage content.
My advice for anyone just starting to build a social media presence is simple: focus on value and connection, not numbers. Be consistent, share what you know, and engage with your audience authentically. Celebrate small milestones, listen to what your followers are asking for, and don’t be afraid to evolve. Social media isn’t just marketing—it’s another way to build relationships, showcase your expertise, and create a community around your mission.
