Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Laura Lieff. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Laura thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
I started as a newspaper writer in Denver and then later became an editor. When I moved from Denver to Vail, I applied my writing experience to the academic world and became a writing tutor at Colorado Mountain College. Prior to CMC, I had never done anything in academics so that was a big shift for me. A few years later, I became a College Essay Consultant at Vail Mountain School which has been equally challenging and rewarding. It’s exciting to have the opportunity to apply my skillset to sectors beyond my Lieff Ink clients!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I was born and raised in Miami, Florida and grew up in the music business. My family founded and operated a chain of record stores in Florida for 50 years and music has always played an important role in my life. In 2002, I moved to Colorado to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I earned my BA in English. While at CU, I wrote for two newspapers, a publicity company, and a band booking agency.
At the age of 23, I became a professional writer when I moved to Denver and began working as a reporter for the “Glendale Cherry Creek Chronicle.” Over the years I was promoted to Content Editor and then to Executive Editor. After seven years at the newspaper, I resigned and moved to the Vail Valley where I run my own business, Lieff Ink, which offers freelance writing, editing, and PR for a variety of clients.
In addition to working diligently for my Lieff Ink clients, I am a writing tutor at Colorado Mountain College and a College Essay Consultant at Vail Mountain School. On Friday nights, I host a radio show called Bite the Bullet on 107.9 Radio Free Minturn. In February 2021, I published my first book called “Wookie Is Not His Real Name.”
When I’m not writing, I’m enjoying the Colorado outdoors with my significant other Brian, our son Fleet, and our pups Sedona and Zephyr.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Keeping in touch with clients is important in my business because people always want to see the latest example of my writing. I send out quarterly newsletters via email, use social media to get the word out about Lieff Ink, and ensure that I’m constantly getting my name out there. After moving to the mountains from Denver, I had to work really hard to establish brand loyalty. I’m lucky to have supportive people around me who continue to refer me to a variety of clients.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word-of-mouth, social media, and referrals!
